INTRODUCTION
General Hazards
Welding Safety
Cutting / Burning Safety
4 welding
FIRE AND EXPLOSION
 Remove flammable material from working area
 Check for fire for 30 minutes after work is finished
 Check emergency escape route
 Ensure fire fighting equipment is suitable for electrical fires
 Avoid release of oxygen
 Ensure tank, vessel or pipe has been purged and safe
 All instructions on Hot Work Permit must be obeyed
5 welding
HOT METAL
 Wear correct PPE to prevent burns and injury by
particles
 Wear clothing that is free from grease and in good
condition
 Assume all weld joints are hot
 Mark welded work hot (or place small pieces in a
marked container)
Always:
6 welding
MECHANICAL HAZARDS
 Work only on approved platforms or scaffolds - wear
safety harness when required
 Keep work area free from obstructions
 Inspect welds on temporary lifting lugs
 Stand clear of heavy tack welded work
 Use suitable eye protection when deslagging, chipping
or grinding
Always:
7 welding
WELDING HAZARDS
Electrical shock
Arcs
Fumes and Gases
Welding in confined spaces
8 welding
ELECTRICAL SHOCK
 Earth work piece separately
 Check for damage to leads, holders
and connections
 Keep area dry where possible
 Use appropriate fall protection
 Check plant is properly earthed
9 welding
ELECTRICAL SHOCK
 Use correct shade of filter glass
 Check helmet is not damaged
 Wear correct PPE to prevent arc burn
 Warn bystanders before striking arc
 Use screens to protect others from arc radiation
10 welding
FUMES AND GASES
 Hazards
 parent metal
 galvanised product
 consumables
 M.S.D.S.
Protection
 fume & gas respirators
 air fed helmet
 ventilation
 extractor fan
11 welding
CONFINED SPACE WELDING
 Only trained people to work in confined spaces
 Check for adequate ventilation or breathing apparatus
 Check tank, drum or pipe has been purged and is safe
to work on
 Gas cylinders not permitted inside confined space
 Check hoses for leakage
 Turn off gas supply and remove hoses at break times
12 welding
P.P.E.
 Shield - regular or clip on
 Jacket
 Gloves
 Boots
 Goggles / flip up visor
 Screens
13 welding
CUTTING / BURNING
Equipment check
Cutting safety requirements
Compressed gas cylinder storage
14 welding
CUTTING EQUIPMENT CHECK
 Flash back arrestors compulsory
 Correct regulators and fitting
 Correct gas for the job
 Connection clean and dry - free from oil
 Bottle trolley compulsory
 Bottle key
15 welding
CUTTING SAFETY
REQUIREMENTS
 Burning gloves
 Jacket / apron
 Goggles
 Fire blankets / extinguishers
 Screens
 Signage
 Hot Work Permit
16 welding
COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDER
STORAGE
 Segregate flammables from oxygenators
 Minimum distances from occupied buildings
 Firewall
 Identification of storage areas
 Bottles must be secured at all times
 Disconnect regulators
17 welding
