Founded in 1983, SCFEA has been working to serve SC events and festivals for the last 18 years. It was started by a group of event and festival planners, many of whom were volunteer coordinators and directors of their respective events. They saw a need to network, learn from each other and have an organized entity that could provide these and other information resources with the growing events in our state. There is little data to show the number of events in our state prior to the early 80’s, but we do know from trend watching and new data the SCFEA has begun collecting that from the late 80’s through the 90’s, community and regional events have exploded in numbers, not just in the Carolinas, but around the country. So, SCFEA was organized and has been growing it’s reach, resources and services over the last 18 years.
The SCFEA has always recognized the 11 tourism regions that were developed by SCPRT to give local communities an opportunity to focus on their unique and individual tourism aspects. Some regions, like the Grand Strand District, clearly have the destination tourism generated my Myrtle Beach and the surrounding beach communities as their nich, but all regions host numerous fairs, festivals, parades, and other public events. The SCFEA has been long time partners with SCATR, (the SC Association of Tourism Regions) and earlier this year began a new campaign to provide planner forums in each of the 11 districts. In May, the SCFEA partnered with the Old 96 District and the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce to host the forum that focused on special events and the revitalization of downtown communities. Later this month, the City of Greenville and the Discover Upcountry District are partnering with us to promote another forum in Greenville that will focus on special event promotions and public relations. We are scheduling district meetings throughout the remainder of the year and plan to continue this localized approach throughout 2012 as well.
Since 2000, the SCFEA has partnered with the NC Association of Festivals & Events to produce joint conferences on an every-other-year basis, alternating hosting responsibilities at each joint conference. After the 2009 economic crisis, the SCFEA responded to the needs of members and began producing the joint conference every year and has been able to maximize the quality of presenters and workshops, networking opportunities with planners from across both states and has been able to meet the need of our for-profit business members by bringing event planners from the two states together. This past January, SCFEA hosted the conference, with more than 300 in attendance at the Greenville Hyatt. The 2 ½ day conference consisted of 19 different workshops, over 30 vendors, 12 showcasing entertainers, and lots of tremendous networking.
These are just two of our photos of our keynote and one of our showcasing bands. We have an evening showcasing dinner that features 8 different entertainers covering generas of all types to meet varying budgets, styles and tastes. It’s one of the most popular segments of the conference.
Annually, we also host a one-day workshop during the month of August. Last year’s workshop covered social media, music licensing, insurance, and email marketing. The 2011 seminar will feature Bonnie Stevens, covering in-depth expert insights to the best practices behind planning details, documenting success, putting your best foot forward and motivating staff and volunteers to success. Bonnie was our most talked about presenter at the conference in January and we’re very excited to have her back. The summer seminar is always held in Columbia and we will be returning to the beautiful grounds at Saluda Shoals Park in their River Conference Center. The seminar is Tuesday, August 2 nd and runs from 9:30am – 3:30pm. Registration for SCFEA members is $55 and non-member registration is $80.
We also provide members a monthly e-newsletter, SCFEA Today, that covers trend topics, industry related articles, association news, links to calendars of events, vendors, and association contacts. We also have a growing FaceBook page where we’re reaching event planners, volunteers, and festival goers. Our web site also provide valuable information to members and non-members alike, with a calendar of events including links to all events, a vendor listing, information on our services, meetings, award winning events, contacts for our Board of Directors and staff, job openings, and more.
In addition to the annual conference and summer seminar and the web site, e-newsletter and FaceBook page, we also offer numerous other services which include, database support, internship placement program, and Ambassador recruitment and rewards program for members who recruit new members, a scholarship program and administrative support and the facilitation of industry information. We’ve just in fact, met with representatives from the University of South Carolina and are very excited to be launching a student chapter on the USC campus for the Fall 2011 semester. Our web site also provide valuable information to members and non-members alike, with a calendar of events including links to all events, a vendor listing, information on our services, meetings, award winning events, contacts for our Board of Directors and staff, job openings, and more.
