Why is Occupy Sandy
Important?
New kind of leadership that encourages
collaboration, initiation, experimentation and
learning as we go.

  • #11 Crisis situation Organizations didn’t respond Forced people to act the way they would without structural constraints/organizations of this world. Can’t take initiative without hierarchy See what people can do when they take initiative See and understand a new kind of leadership -
  • #14 Values represented by symbols, connection to occupy, concept about decentralized intiative
  • #16 Gan Two kinds of spaces become crucial to facilitating Network Explosions: Physical Spaces and Digital Spaces People build networks through connection, and platforms are the structures, communications systems and activities which allows people to connect. The closer these two types of spaces mirror each other (even being duplicates of each other) the more rapidly the network explodes. Why? Trust <--Continuity -> Trust <-Continuity-> virtuous cycle Face-to-face interaction in physical space builds TRUST (see EFFICIENCIES OF TRUST) which is crucial for speed, efficiency, reducing cost, increasing labor, and expanding the periphery. Sharing space breaks down divisions. (see study about how academic dep’ts relocating to new buildings → new collaborations) Digital Spaces: allows for 24/7 connectivity, so that relationships built on trust can continue to operate full time, extending Spaces that allow people to find each other outside of their existing silos, form new networks based on shared inspiration, and then take action together autonomously.. These platforms can serve as network generators or incubators, and when virtual and physical platforms mirror each other they can create rapid network explosions. They are not just virtual (facebook, listserves, etc) they can be physical spaces, and often need to be. Online Social networks are just one example. Zucotti Park was another. They can be virtual, or physical. Further reading: Castells: “Spaces of Autonomy”. efficiency around the clock. EXAMPLES: OWS and Occupy Sandy fused these two together, almost mirroring them exactly (like creative list serves for every working group) creating a rapid network explosion. Tahrir Square. PCM - july 1 meeting - hubs & physical meetings LINK: See Castells: “Spaces of Autonomy” concept in Networks of Hope Tammy question: how do we structure QUESTION: how do we create spaces and systems that are more effective platforms to help people self-organize? Momentum: Absorption- these platforms what you can absorb people into - but the structure of the platform matters (this is not an email list) Mass training can also serve as a platform for self organizing
