Agenda
How to avoid downtime on your electronic
physical security system:
• What is System Health Monitoring?
• How does it work?
• Do I need System Health Monitoring for my
Security Systems?
• What is SecurePlan?
This webinar will be approximately 30 minutes.
What is System Health Monitoring?
• System Health Monitoring is a proactive
means for detecting and preventing
operational problems on your electronic
security system that could lead to system
degradation or failure.
• System Health Monitoring confirms that a
system is operating properly, but does
NOT monitor operational security events
or stream video.
Setting up System Health Monitoring
Preferred Method – Local Network
Appliance
• Utilizes independent appliance specifically
configured for PhySec networks & systems.
• Dual network ports allow segregation between
local network and Internet if necessary.
• Monitoring data logs stored locally on the
appliance vs Cloud minimizing network impact
and exposure.
• Alerts are reported via a Secure Encrypted
outbound channel (SSL) no VPN. Generally no
firewall configuration required by IT.
How does it work?
1. System issue detected by local monitoring
device
2. Signal is securely transferred (outbound) to a
centralized SHM system
3. Technician reviews the alert, determines
severity, and conducts preliminary investigation
via the connection established by the outbound
alert.
4. If issue cannot be resolved by remote
technician, a local service technician is
dispatched to site for further investigation and
issue resolution.
Top Issues detected with SHM
Camera connectivity issues – failure, errors, disconnect
Access Control System Node connectivity issues
Server Alerts:
• Hard Drive errors/predictive Failure
• Excessive CPU/RAM utilization
Sub-component alerts:
• Low Battery
• Temperature
• Traffic congestion
• Fan speed
Total System Failure

Things to consider:
• What is the impact of unexpected disruption to business
operations?
• How are system issues detected today?
1. Camera failures
2. Access Control system issues
3. Server & sub-component alerts
• What is the cost of an emergency response to a system outage?
Benefits of System Health Monitoring
• Proactive notification of system issues
• Substantially reduces exposure to system
downtime
• Detects previously “undetectable” issues
• Helps to avoid expensive “quick fix” solutions
• Reduces long term costs of
maintenance and repairs
• Extends system life

SecurePlanHealth Success Stories
1. City of Conroe – Received a SHM alert of a hard drive failure within a
RAID-5 array on a Video Surveillance Server. The CSC ordered the
replacement hard drive and shipped it to the Houston office. The drive was
replaced within 3 business days preventing system downtime, a potential
loss of recorded video and emergency service.
2. DADS State Supported Living Center, Denton - The CSC received an
SHM alert that network switch 228B went offline isolating two cameras. The
CSC attempted remote resolution but was unable to access the switch or
power cycle cameras, thus a technician was dispatched. The technician
arrived the same day and was able to restore connection to the switch,
bringing the cameras back online within 6 hours of detecting the outage.
3. Big Spring State Hospital – During a quarterly system inspection, a CSC
technician identified a potentially critical problem with a Video Surveillance
Server. The CSC coordinated with manufacturer tech support and the on-
site KSS technician to resolve the issue. After creating a back-up of the
system data, recreating the RAID array and re-imaging the system, the
server was rebooted and restored with minimal downtime and avoiding
critical data loss and a future service call.
Final Thoughts
• Knight Security Systems has been providing System Health
Monitoring for clients since 2010 and this proactive approach has

physical security systems and provides capabilities beyond
standard IT monitoring software.
• Along with System Health Monitoring, the KSS Clients benefit
from the group of trained technicians in the Client Support Center
as well as local technicians to respond onsite as required.
