WB03 – diary entry
Song 1 – Sympathy Empathy
Time signature – 4/4
Tempo – bpm 82
Key – G# (Sharp)
Verse Break Verse Break Chorus Break Verse Break Chorus. – Structure
Overall, Sympathy Empathy has allowed me to explore the alternative rock/ indie
genre style drawing inspiration from bands like title fight and sonic youth, while
maintaining a slow tempo to help illustrate the sombre mood highlighted by the lyrics.
Throughout the song the vocals are gentle even during the chorus I try to sing with
care yet raising my pitch to bring variety yet staying within key. All done to emphasis
the sombre/tired theme within the song. I was able to use a chorus plug in for the
lead guitar and a de-esser plug in for the bass to keep it at a minimal level not to
overpower the other instruments. Bothe common tropes of other alt- rock songs like
“Do you believe in Rapture?” by Sonic youth.
I changed the first verse of the song completely, using imagery to help engage a
listener. I have also re-recorded the entire bass line adding in little melodies within
the first two breaks, added reverb to the vocals and mixed accordingly, edited the
drum track to include a break before the chorus to add power when the chorus
comes in.
Song 2 – Streamline
Time signature – 6/4
Bpm – 118
Key – E on 4th fret capo
Verse Breakdown Chorus Verse Chorus Outro – Structure
I decided to keep the lyrics, I feel as if my confidence was the main issue, I had with
them. In my opinion they work well with the new chorus, in which I added some
harmonics and a grand piano on my DAW. Which may not be a common trope
among folk, singer songwriter songs but I feel as if they fitted the track and the
angelic/spacey mood I was trying to communicate to the listener.
Originally, the song was to be a country indie folk and a bit of lo-fi, drawing
inspiration from songs like Grantchester meadows – Pink Floyd. Production wise I
was not expecting to use any midi effect although I did not feel the need to add bass
and yet it was missing something. I do not think I have strayed to far from the Folk,
singer songwriter style still using abnormal picking techniques which would be heard
in other songs of the same genre, however there is a significant difference from what
I was expecting the final track to sound like.
WB03 – diary entry
The recording of the acoustic guitar was arguably the most important part of this
track, the recording needed to be a perfect performance and the mic needed to be in
an optimal space for recording and I can gladly say the recording went well.
in the song.
