The issue?The media has warped what we deem to be beautiful and this has a clear impact on ideas about body image.
Interesting StatsThe Real women project claims that the average person sees and hears between 400 and 600 advertisements a day, bringing the total to 400million by the time we are 60yrs old.  One in every 11 of these ads are beauty related.The average women’s magazine features 63 diet ads compared to the average men’s magazine which has one.
The effectsAswell as being packed full of advertisements directly promoting dieting, every fashion publication is full of young, tall, thin, perfect looking models who provoke young girls to try and change themselves at a very young age through dieting and spending huge amounts of money on their appearance.
Mixed messages The influence of media on body image is encouraging young girls to grow up quicker and women to grow old slower thanks to anti-aging treatments and surgery.
Self hate = Capitalism’s LoveIt is not suprising that the fastest growing business is the diet industry, despite only a 3% success rate.  70% of women are size 12 and over, but size 12 is considered a larger size.  Self loathing is a fuel for capitalism and we have bought into the idea that our bodies and appearance are not good enough.
