 From the moment we are a pretty little girl in
a cute dress, and our brother is a big, strong
boy who is smart, we learn what society
expects from us
 Lookism; Discrimination or prejudice against
people based on their appearance

3. BEAUTY FOR SALE
 Magazine publishers, cosmetics, fashion and
diet industries adeptly exploit massage that
we must conform to the current idea of
beauty to be valued as women
 Today participants of TV programs have their
faces and bodies permanently altered
through plastic surgery right on TV.

5. FOR HIM
 For many women the main reason to
“improve” our appearance is to attract and
win the approval of men.
 We have been conditioned to think we must
compete with each other for male- attention
and provoke envy in other women.
 The message that we should keep quiet and
look sexy for men is so deeply woven into
the fabric of our society that we barely notice
it.

7. MYTH OR EALITY
 Most women can obtain the “ideal” body type
portrayed by models through diet and
exercise
 The truth is that the average American
woman will never be able to turn herself into
a pond super model no matter how hard she
tries

9. DO I LOOK FAT?
 There is nothing inherently repulsive about
fat
 Women who are too thin do not menstruate
and can not bear children
 The message lately seems to be that por
power as women may increase, but our
physical bodies must shrink.
 Fear of fat rubs us of our pride and
energy,couses conflict between women, and
undermines our self-confidence.

10. HOW PARENTS CAN HELP?
 Adolescent girls are particularly susceptible
to cultural messages because we are
learning what it is to be adults.
 Observe your own behavior. The sad truth is
that many girls learnt o hate their bodies by
watching and listening to their mothers diet
and talk about their bodies.
 Teach your daughter that power is about
what dreams and goals she accomplishes,
not about her looks.
 Help girls focus on health rather than weight

11. BUILDING A BETTER BODY IMAGE
 Compliment yourself
 Experiment with what weight feels
comfortable for you rather than trying
primarily to be thin.
 Examine how your own behavior encourages
the media’s tactics
 Take up a sport or other activity you’ve tried
before
 Celebrate who you are!!!!!

12. DISCUSSION QUESTION?
Women are always expected to care
more about their looks and the way they act,
society always expects that from us. When did
this started that women are the ones to care
this much but men basically can act in any way
they wish and look in any way they wish they
are just men?
