John Wesley Powell was a 19th century American explorer, geologist, and scientist best known for his exploration of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. He developed the watershed paradigm, the concept that a watershed is a bounded hydrologic system in which all living things are interconnected by their shared water sources. A watershed is defined as an area of land that drains into a common body of water. Watershed concepts can be used to teach about various environmental and geographic topics.
