The Watergate scandal began in the early hours of June 17, 1972 when a security guard discovered tape covering door locks at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate office complex. Police found five men inside with cameras and wiretapping equipment. The break-in was later traced back to the Nixon administration's "Plumbers" unit, a secret police force established by Nixon to stop media leaks. Over the course of two years, the scandal grew to involve multiple break-ins at the DNC as well as other criminal acts authorized by the Nixon administration, ultimately leading to Nixon's resignation in August 1974.
