This document provides instructions for making a miniature tornado in a bottle using two plastic bottles, water, glitter, and tape. The method involves filling one bottle with water and glitter, taping the bottles together neck to neck, and swirling the bottles to create circulation and form a small tornado in the top bottle. The discussion section then explains how tornadoes form in nature through opposing winds that meet and spin horizontally before rising vertically due to hot air updrafts.
1. How to Make a Tornado in a Bottle
Materials:
2x2L round, plastic bottles
1 roll of tape
1.3L of water
glitter (optional)
Method:
1. Take off the lids of the 2L bottles.
2. Pour 1.3L of water into one bottle.
3. Put 2 teaspoon of glitter into the bottle with the water.
(Optional.)
4. Put the tops of each bottle together.
5. Hold the necks of the bottles and hold the bottom of the bottle.
6. Turn the bottlesupside down.
7. Stick the necks together with the sticky tape.
8. Move the bottles in a circular motion.
9. Observe the result in the top bottle.
Discussion:
How do tornadoes happen in the real world?
First, two wind that go in opposite directions meet together and
they theystart a spinning horizontal wind. Hot humid air
rises(updraft) and when the horizontal wind goes up and it
changes to a vertical shape.Because of the downdraft the vertical
wind goes down and starts to destroy the houses.
Tornadoes are 2 to 10 kilometers long. The wind’s speed is 100 to
500 kilometers per hours. Tornadoes usually last less than10
minutes but strong ones up to 25 minutes.
