1. How to make a tornado in a bottle
Materials:
two 2L plastic bottles (the Coke or Sprite kinds of bottle).
glitter (the darker, the better)
1.5 L of water
teaspoon
a lot of old news paper and recycled paper
patience
strength
large tape
two mini people
Method:
1. Take the newspaper and recycled paper and spread them on the table.
2. Pour 1.5L ofwater into one of the bottles and drop the two mini people into the bottle.
3. Drop 1 teaspoon of glitter inside the bottle.
4. Carefully place the top of the empty bottle onto the top of the full bottle.
5. Tape the two bottles together(tape it going around 30 or 40 at least times) so that it iswater proof and
it has no holes.
6. Tip the two bottles(now combined) to check that no water will drip.
7. Tip it again and shake it going in a circular motion.
8. Observe a vortex forming.
9. If it works, you mightsee the vortex sucking up one of the mini people.
The Science Behind It:
Tornadoes are made by giant storms called super cells. They are spinning columns of air caused
by different winds going in different directions. When two or more winds bump into each other,
they each want to get their way. In order to do this, they have to spin around each other. When they
dothis, they start spinning around each other, causing a tornado.
