World Water Day highlights issues around access to clean water in parts of Africa. An estimated 1 in 8 people globally do not have access to clean water, and children in Africa spend an average of 5 hours per day fetching water. Self Help Africa is working to provide rural families in countries like Burkina Faso, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Togo, Uganda, and Zambia with access to clean water through wells and other water projects. Last year their projects provided over 15,000 people with safe drinking water.

4. Is it fair that globally an average of 40 billion hours a year is wasted fetching water? Self Help Africa doesn’t think so and is working hard to give rural families access to that vital necessity that so many of us take for granted

5. Poor Sanitation affects 2.5 Million people. Having water to wash your hands can reduce diarrhoeal diseases by 47%. This means families are healthier and can do the things we take for granted – work, play, go to school.

9. One Water One Water is a great new charity that gives all the profits from the sale of its bottled water to build wells in Africa. The water is drawn up by children playing on a roundabout – so the children can play while bringing water to their communities. www.onedifference.org
