This document summarizes the history and current state of solid waste management (SWM) practices in developed and developing countries. In developed countries, public health concerns, environmental protection, resource scarcity, climate change, and public participation have driven SWM practices towards more integrated systems since the 1960s. However, in developing countries SWM is complicated by rapid urbanization, inequality, cultural and socioeconomic factors, weak policies and governance, and international influences. Traditional systems analysis approaches used in developed countries have limited applicability in developing country contexts due to their complexity. There is a need for new SWM approaches founded on post-normal science and complex adaptive systems thinking to address the unique challenges faced in developing countries.
