Located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the
Wake Forest University School of Medicine was founded in 1902
and its Department of Anesthesiology has received national
recognition for excellence in research, teaching, and patient care.
The school’s Department of Anesthesiology first began to grow
following World War II and became a truly modern center for the
study and teaching of anesthesiology in the late 1960s. Most
recently, the department improved under the leadership of John
Charles Gerancher, who first joined Wake Forest University in 1996.
Serving at different times as an assistant professor, associate
professor, section head, medical director, and full professor, he
made valuable contributions to the program, designing and
implementing improvements to the regional anesthesia section, the
teaching program, and the clinical care area at the Wake Forest
Baptist Hospital. From 2006 to 2011 JC Gerancher also designed
and built an operating room computer information system for the
school.
