Volcanoes form when magma forces its way through cracks in the Earth's crust. Over 8,000 people live near active volcanoes despite the danger, as the fertile soil produced by eruptions supports agriculture. Mauna Loa in Hawaii is the world's largest volcano and has been erupting continuously since 1984, allowing its activity to be observed from viewing platforms. Around 70% of the planet's active volcanoes are located along the Ring of Fire around the Pacific Ocean.
