Assignment ESSAY
EVENT: ESSAY TEAMWORK
How would you define an Event? An event is a professional
Fine art museum event or a quality performance as discussed in
class or in your text. It could be attending an art museum of
quality, a professional musical concert like what we study in
Humanities, or a play on campus at Richland or a play off
campus at a professional theatre, a Dance Performance at a
college or a professional dance group at Richland College, or a
professional dance company production at another college or a
professional performance group in a city or in a community.
Event Examples: High quality art museums, Theatrical events
such as professional plays and some on college campuses (ask
me in an email if it will work) Dance Recitals and concerts,
Musical Concerts such as Richland College noon recitals on
Tuesdays, Theatro Dallas, Concerts and the Symphony concerts
in the Morton Meyerson Symphony Center. Also, the Operas in
Dallas and in Ft. Worth, the Kimbell Art Museum, Nasher
Sculpture Center Museum. SMU Meadows Museum, Richland
College brings artists to campus ask me about these events.
Fill out the Introductionabout the Event by answering questions
and the Second Part which is the Body, about the event and its
impact upon you, the individuals who you spoke with who
attended the event and then wrap it up in your conclusion
The draft questions do not need to be turned in to the instructor.
Turn in the ESSAY. You will notice that it is organized with an
Introduction, Body and Conclusion. Include your bibliography
at the end. You will want to take notes when you are discussing
the event. Include the individuals’ reactions to the event in your
body of your ESSAY. Write about how you felt, what you
learned, and how you may have disagreed or agreed with those
you interviewed. For information on the format see the MLA
INFORMATION at the end: scroll down. Your paper will be on
separate paper. The questions are supplied for you to develop
an outline and rough draft. Your ESSAY should end up being at
least 2 pages. Your ESSAY may be 3 pages if you include
photos
Another example could be what a person whom you spoke with
said about the use of symbolism used by the artist and how you
viewed it from a different vantage point. (Then you would
explain why that is the situation.)
DIRECTIONS:
After you write your paper explaining the event which will give
information concerning the background and historical data, you
will include the information about where the event was, who
was in the event, what you noticed, when the event was, why
the event was held, who sponsored the event etc. Then for the
Second Part, you will write about the discussion which you had
with at least one other individual who was also at the event and
you will write down what that person said and what you said
and how you shared your ideas. You will write about how you
saw the situation similarly or differently and how the
experience helped you understand the purpose of artistic events.
You will write about why there are artistic events in the
community and the purpose of a community supporting art
events. You will talk about how you agreed or disagreed in the
value and purpose of art in the community and why we have art
in our community.
BELOW are some suggestions to help you when talking to the
individuals attending the event with you and discussing the
event:
Did you notice anything that was a challenge for you to
understand?
Was there anything that was difficult to comprehend that
bothered you while attending this event?
What was challenging for you?
Have you attended an event like this before in this
neighborhood? Why or Why not?
Did you find that discussing the event was helpful to
understanding the event better?
Did you feel like you would like to learn more about this type
of event and study more in depth why they do these types of
events?
Did the event help you in any way understand another
point of view?
What did you learn?
Did doing some research about the event and reading up
about the background help you? In what way?
When responding and talking to another student --
Did you find that you were in agreement or were not in
agreement with the other person? Explain in detail your
response.
ASSIGNMENT
Your Name __________________________
Date of Event ________________________
Location of Event_____________________
Directions: After filling out the form with your responses to
your experience after attending a live event, you will write a 2
to 3 page reflective paper about your firsthand experience going
to an event. By answering the questions in the following
questionnaire, you will be able to compose your paper by
organizing your responses. Your responses will come from your
observations, feelings, and impressions from your live
experience. In addition, you should include factual background
material where needed along with any necessary historical data
to give your paper substance. Support materials must be from
reputable sources. Include a bibliography at the end of your
paper that has your sources if you used magazines or web sites
for a quote of a famous person for example.
Length of Paper: Your paper will be a minimum of two to three
pages, which will include a photograph of yourself at the event
or a scanned photo of the ticket stub as proof that you attended
the event. Be sure to include a photo or scan.
Support Material and Research: When using source material be
sure to keep track of your references and document your
sources. When using quotes, be sure to use quotation marks and
give the individual credit using the MLA guidelines including
the source. You are to use MLA Format in this paper. (MLA
Directions are at the bottom of this assignment as a guide in a
separate hand-out so you should scroll down to see them at the
bottom of this assignment.)
MLA FORMAT For Background Research Material: Use MLA
format when you use quotations or any references in researching
the culture when you write about how your event was reflecting
the culture it represented. Use MLA format when you write
about the community that your event reflected and/or
represented. If you add historical data to support your paper this
is very useful and adds substance to your paper. THE

I can identify at least two major types of behaviors, beliefs,

and experiencing the event and doing some research about the
Culture and their beliefs. From thinking about behaviors,

One of the first things that came to my mind when I was at the

I selected one major focus to write about for this assignment. I
have chosen to explain in detail and describe how the elements
common to this discipline helped understand the event better.
For example, the elements I noticed were:
_____________________________________________________
___________________________________________________

______________________________________________ .
I would also like to describe how the values and beliefs of those
artists, performers and/or creators that I was involved with were

were they similar to yours or how they were not similar?)

The type of event I attended is the type I usually attend because
___________________________or I usually would not go to
this type of event but since I am in this class I decided to attend
and I found it to be __________________________________.
This live event took place in a community that I would describe
as:
_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
________________________________________________. I did
some research and I found that the community held this type of
event because it reflected some important characteristics
common to that community. I noticed the following:
_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
________________________________________________.
I asked some of the personnel that worked at the location of the
event and looked up their website to draw some conclusions
about how this event could influence or have an impact upon the
community. I found out the following:

My own personal opinion was that the event had:

Write above about, (How did this event have a positive or have
a negative influences upon the community?). If they impact was
negative or positive, write about what those reasons are for
being positive or negative to that community and why or why
not? Explain in detail One of the most striking parts of the
event was:

Team Work Portion of this part of the paper will be to include
what your team members said and felt about the event:
Now write how the person or person on your team felt about the
following questions. Write what they said and place a few of
their comments in quote marks. Include the comments also in
your research from the personnel involved in preparing for the
event or those who were the performers or the artists.
Questions to ask and answer in this portion of your paper.
The work or particular part of the performance that had the most
impact upon me was ________________________. This was
because it made me feel and
understand____________________________________________
__________________________.
Ask your team members the same question and write down their
answers.
Then write down how your answer and feelings towards the art
or performance was similar or different from that of anyone you
talked with about the event. Be sure to write down the reactions
of each one of your team members’ viewpoints.
CONCLUSION
After this experience I feel that I have learned:
All in all my team seemed to: (Did they agree or disagree
mainly etc.)

Since I saw this event LIVE and in person, I especially noticed:

I changed my mind about this event because I noticed:

Team Work
You are the team leader of a group so you should interview
another person who you go with to the event or meet at the
event. You should also have someone who you email or talk
with at the event who is part of the event who can explain
information to you. It can be the actor, the artist, a musician or
writer or someone who helped with the event. You will ask them
how the event influenced their life or similar types of questions
about the impact the event had upon them.
These responses with be mentioned and included in your
ESSAY. After you write your paper you should write a summary
about the experience you had when you went to the event with
someone else. Include those comments and the comments of the
person who was part of the actual event as well, in Your
ESSAY.
Place to find information for this assignment:
Helpful Hints are also on the Library website.
You may also contain your expert by email. Then talk to him by
phone as well and let him know you will be wanting to see him
at the event.
On the Richland College library website there is a page which
will be helpful just type in libguides.richlandcollege.edu and
scroll down to humanities assessment this gives you the
websites

Directions MLA (if you use a website about definitions about
fine art or about background or historical data put the address of
the material in a bibliography in MLA Form) Thank you
Follow directions in this packet
Directions on using MLA - be sure to use good references
Grading Rubric below
Our paper will be 300 words Includes your comments and
reactions plus you may use sources: When you use sources you
should be sure to give credit to the sources
MLA’s WEB page is located at http://www.mla.org
Use 1” margins at top, bottom, left and right.
Put your last name and the page number on each page, ½” from
the right side of your paper.
Double space each entry at the left margin.
Indent the second and all subsequent lines in a citation ½ inch
(5 spaces if using a typewriter).
This is called a hanging indention
Alphabetize citations by author’s last name or if the author’s
name is unknown, by the first word in the title other than a
definite or an indefinite article (“a”, “an”. “The”).
End each citation with a period. Much of the paper is your own
ideas which is great. (My opinion)
Works: SOURCE PAGE - Text is also fine to use Cited Page
should look like this

QUOTATIONS. (No quotation marks needed)
Indent these then with a one inch margin.
Be sure to label your paper so the professor knows it is your
work and which section you are in.
Include Name, section number and the date:
For example Name: John Doe

number you or in) Date: example: December 10, 2015 -
August 5, 2017 (date you are in the class)
Rubric: GRADING: see the following so you know how to
receive the best grade possible.
How your will be Graded:
Write your paper on separate sheets using answers as your
GUIDE for your paper. You may write what you think and feel.
You will be graded according to:
Attending as event
Building a team by discussing the event with others
Writing an ESSAY after attending the event and discussing the
event with at least 2 other individuals.
The written ESSAY will be on separate paper. These questions
and blanks are supplied to you as a rough draft for you to help
you include everything necessary in your ESSAY. Be sure to
keep notes when you ask your team members about how they
felt and responded to the art work or performance.
Your paper should be 2 to 3 pages in length - Your photo or
scanned ticket may be part of the 2 or 3 pages. Paper is
separated into Introduction, Body, and Conclusion and your
comments with your individual.
Be detailed and Answer all questions and answer them.
Incorporate all answers about values, beliefs and Culture into
your paper. Be sure to use terms correctly and utilize correct
spelling and definitions. Length of paper must be 2 or 3 pages.
You may include a photograph. Print should not be larger than
12 font. Double space is o.k. but if you use photos it should be
4 pages in order to answer everything if you include some
historical data. Better grade if you include some research and
some historical data. Use of some definitions from a good
professional scholarly source. --- Use of bibliography and
quote marks if needed: Good quotations help. You do not need
to use quote marks when just saying responses of how friends
felt Use quotation marks if from magazines and web sites.
Neatness counts: follow the MLA form if you quote outside
work other than the individual you interviewed about the event.

  • 2. Section Number__________________________________________ Assignment ESSAY EVENT: ESSAY TEAMWORK How would you define an Event? An event is a professional Fine art museum event or a quality performance as discussed in class or in your text. It could be attending an art museum of quality, a professional musical concert like what we study in Humanities, or a play on campus at Richland or a play off campus at a professional theatre, a Dance Performance at a college or a professional dance group at Richland College, or a professional dance company production at another college or a professional performance group in a city or in a community. Event Examples: High quality art museums, Theatrical events such as professional plays and some on college campuses (ask me in an email if it will work) Dance Recitals and concerts, Musical Concerts such as Richland College noon recitals on Tuesdays, Theatro Dallas, Concerts and the Symphony concerts in the Morton Meyerson Symphony Center. Also, the Operas in Dallas and in Ft. Worth, the Kimbell Art Museum, Nasher Sculpture Center Museum. SMU Meadows Museum, Richland College brings artists to campus ask me about these events. Fill out the Introductionabout the Event by answering questions and the Second Part which is the Body, about the event and its impact upon you, the individuals who you spoke with who attended the event and then wrap it up in your conclusion The draft questions do not need to be turned in to the instructor. Turn in the ESSAY. You will notice that it is organized with an Introduction, Body and Conclusion. Include your bibliography at the end. You will want to take notes when you are discussing the event. Include the individuals’ reactions to the event in your body of your ESSAY. Write about how you felt, what you learned, and how you may have disagreed or agreed with those you interviewed. For information on the format see the MLA INFORMATION at the end: scroll down. Your paper will be on
  • 3. separate paper. The questions are supplied for you to develop an outline and rough draft. Your ESSAY should end up being at least 2 pages. Your ESSAY may be 3 pages if you include photos Another example could be what a person whom you spoke with said about the use of symbolism used by the artist and how you viewed it from a different vantage point. (Then you would explain why that is the situation.) DIRECTIONS: After you write your paper explaining the event which will give information concerning the background and historical data, you will include the information about where the event was, who was in the event, what you noticed, when the event was, why the event was held, who sponsored the event etc. Then for the Second Part, you will write about the discussion which you had with at least one other individual who was also at the event and you will write down what that person said and what you said and how you shared your ideas. You will write about how you saw the situation similarly or differently and how the experience helped you understand the purpose of artistic events. You will write about why there are artistic events in the community and the purpose of a community supporting art events. You will talk about how you agreed or disagreed in the value and purpose of art in the community and why we have art in our community. BELOW are some suggestions to help you when talking to the individuals attending the event with you and discussing the event: Did you notice anything that was a challenge for you to understand? Was there anything that was difficult to comprehend that bothered you while attending this event?
  • 4. What was challenging for you? Have you attended an event like this before in this neighborhood? Why or Why not? Did you find that discussing the event was helpful to understanding the event better? Did you feel like you would like to learn more about this type of event and study more in depth why they do these types of events? Did the event help you in any way understand another point of view? What did you learn? Did doing some research about the event and reading up about the background help you? In what way? When responding and talking to another student -- Did you find that you were in agreement or were not in agreement with the other person? Explain in detail your response. ASSIGNMENT Your Name __________________________ Date of Event ________________________ Location of Event_____________________ Directions: After filling out the form with your responses to your experience after attending a live event, you will write a 2 to 3 page reflective paper about your firsthand experience going to an event. I selected one major focus to write about for this assignment. I have chosen to explain in detail and describe how the elements common to this discipline helped understand the event better.
  • 10. For example, the elements I noticed were: _____________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ ______________________________________________ . I would also like to describe how the values and beliefs of those artists, performers and/or creators that I was involved with were similar or/and different from my own beliefs and values. The type of event I attended is the type I usually attend because ___________________________or I usually would not go to this type of event but since I am in this class I decided to attend and I found it to be __________________________________. This live event took place in a community that I would describe as: _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ ________________________________________________. I did some research and I found that the community held this type of event because it reflected some important characteristics common to that community. I noticed the following: _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ ________________________________________________.
  • 11. I asked some of the personnel that worked at the location of the event and looked up their website to draw some conclusions about how this event could influence or have an impact upon the community. I found out the following: _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ ________________________________________________. My own personal opinion was that the event had: _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ ______________________________________________. Write above about, (How did this event have a positive or have a negative influences upon the community?). Team Work Portion of this part of the paper will be to include what your team members said and felt about the event: Now write how the person or person on your team felt about the following questions. Write what they said and place a few of their comments in quote marks. Include the comments also in your research from the personnel involved in preparing for the event or those who were the performers or the artists. Ask your team members the same question and write down their answers. Then write down how your answer and feelings towards the art or performance was similar or different from that of anyone you talked with about the event. Be sure to write down the reactions of each one of your team members’ viewpoints. CONCLUSION After this experience I feel that I have learned: All in all my team seemed to: (Did they agree or disagree mainly etc.) _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ ________________________________________________. Be sure to use terms correctly and utilize correct spelling and definitions. Length of paper must be 2 or 3 pages. You may include a photograph. Print should not be larger than 12 font. Double space is o.k. but if you use photos it should be 4 pages in order to answer everything if you include some historical data. Better grade if you include some research and some historical data. Use of some definitions from a good professional scholarly source. --- Use of bibliography and quote marks if needed: Good quotations help.
