Vocabulary is crucial to reading comprehension. Good readers have extensive vocabularies allowing them to understand texts by assembling word meanings in context. While difficult to measure, vocabulary knowledge is very important for learning to read and future reading development. Vocabulary should be taught both directly through definitions and indirectly through extensive reading, repetition, and exposure to words in multiple contexts like speaking and writing tasks. The most effective approaches actively engage students and use multiple methods rather than relying on just one.
