The collaborative nature of developing these modules across institutions through the Learning Innovation Network has been a key success. The newsletter provides updates on the validation and piloting of various teaching and learning modules across different higher education institutions in Ireland.

The Diplôme CAFEL is a 10-year old program that certifies emerging jobs and skills in e-learning project management. It is a partnership between a university and CCIP that takes a blended academic and professional approach with an emphasis on learning by doing through real-world projects. Over 140 projects have been completed. The program uses online and collaborative learning tools over 7-9 months to develop technical, instructional, and project management skills for e-learning. It has evolved to offer more flexibility, individualization, and opportunities for social and community-based learning.

As universities become increasingly reliant on the online delivery of courses for distance education, those students without access to the Internet are increasingly marginalised. Among those most marginalised are incarcerated students who are often from low socio-economic status backgrounds and have limited access to resources. This article reports on four projects that incrementally build on each other, three of which are completed, at the University of Southern Queensland that seek to provide access to higher education for incarcerated students. These projects developed a modified version of Moodle, called Stand Alone Moodle (SAM), which doesn’t require Internet access, but provides the same level of access and interactivity as regular Moodle. EBook readers were also used in two of the projects. A description of the projects, a summary of the results and issues is provided. The projects will be extended to deploy Stand Alone Moodle and tablet computers to correctional centres across Australia with a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Blackburn College Cloud Computing update

Blackburn College implemented a cloud-based virtual desktop infrastructure to improve the student experience. The VDI allows students to access assistive software like MindView from on or off campus. It also enables staff to access internal software externally. Over 1,000 staff and 50 students can currently access resources through the VDI. The College aims to roll out use of the VDI to its over 10,000 students. It is estimated the VDI will save the College $150,000 over three years.

Blackburn College Cloud Computing update

Blackburn College implemented a cloud-based virtual desktop infrastructure to improve the student experience. They created a VDI for students to access MindView, software that supports students with learning disabilities. Over 50 students can now access MindView from on or off campus. The VDI also allows over 1,000 staff to access Microsoft Office remotely and use classroom software. It is estimated the VDI will save the college $150,000 over three years while supporting over 10,000 students.

Stratford University was facing challenges with student engagement, collaborative learning, and syncing data between their learning management system (LMS) and student information system. Ballistic Learning helped upgrade Stratford's existing Moodle LMS by developing social networking features to encourage discussion, implementing new course formats and templates for consistent instruction, adding gamification for motivation, and integrating the LMS with their SIS to enable data sharing. Ballistic Learning was chosen for their experience with Moodle development and domain expertise to advise on features that would help Stratford achieve their objectives.

The cloud-based model with Google Apps, video conferencing, and a mobile-first approach allows for powerful collaboration between students and faculty both on-campus and remotely. Choosing SaaS avoided the high costs and complexity of maintaining physical infrastructure, while still providing state-of-the-art learning technology.

Brockenhurst college

Brockenhurst College decided to delay transitioning its student relationship system to the cloud due to concerns over bandwidth reliability when student usage was high. Testing showed the cloud-based Azure platform was robust, but the college's internet connection proved to be the weak link under heavy usage. The connection is scheduled for an upgrade in December 2013, after which the college will reevaluate moving to the cloud. Transitioning to the cloud could save £10k annually in IT costs and improve the student experience with faster response times and increased availability.
