Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms

Vitamin B12 is also called as Cobalamin. It is a water soluble vitamin. This vitamin is important to
the human body as it plays a key role in the normal functioning of brain and nervous system. B 12
vitamin is also involved in the formation of blood, synthesis of DNA and energy production in the
body. One can get B12 naturally from food items like meat, fish and dairy products. It is prepared
in the laboratory to treat the patients suffering with B12 vitamin deficiency.

B12 vitamin is used to treat Pernicious anemia, memory loss and Alzheimer's disease. It is used to
boost your mood and energy.B12 vitamin increases your concentration and improves your
immune system. It delays aging. It lowers the high homocysteine levels in the body. This
homocysteine causes heart diseases. B12 vitamin either individually or along with other vitamins is
used to treat heart diseases, diabetes, sleeping disorders, depression, mental disorders, weak
bones, AIDS, inflammatory bowel disease and swollen tendons. It is also used in the treatment of
asthma, allergies, cervical cancer and skin infections.

When vitamin B12 is reduced in the body the body shows vitamin deficiency symptoms. Usually
B12 vitamin deficiency occurs due to lack of intake of balanced diet or because of some medicines
that suppress gastric acid production. The most common cause is insufficient stomach acid that
separates B12 vitamin from ingested protein. The other reasons of B12 vitamin deficiency are
malabsorption, chronic diseases like liver and kidney disorders and pernicious anemia.
Consumption of alcohol may also cause B12 vitamin deficiency. B12 vitamin deficiency is
commonly seen in pregnant women.

Coming to symptoms of B12 vitamin deficiency symptoms like fatigue, bleeding gums,
constipation, irritability and lack of concentration are seen in the initial stages. Sore throat, sense
of deadness, cold and hot feeling and shooting pain in the body parts may also be seen. Loss of
appetite and weight gain is very common in B12 vitamin deficiency. B12 vitamin deficiency may
also cause long term symptoms like Alzheimer's disease, stroke, menstrual problems and heart
diseases.

Deficiency of vitamin B12 may also cause acute pain in the limbs, weakness of arms and legs and
unnatural jerking of limbs. B12 vitamin deficiency some times leads to pernicious anemia.
Depression, nervousness, unpleasant body odor and neuritis are some of the symptoms of B12
vitamin deficiency. Complicatedness in walking and speaking occurs in a person suffering with
B12 vitamin deficiency. B12 vitamin deficiency may cause megablostic anemia. It is a type of
anemia due to elongated cells with characteristic changes in the neutrophils of the cells.

B12 vitamin deficiency may cause macrocytic anemia. Neurological abnormalities of B12 vitamin
deficiency include sensory deficits, loss of deep tendon reflexes, movement disorders, neuro
psychiatric changes and seizures. If these symptoms are not detected early and treated it may
lead to permanent mental corrosion and even paralysis of different parts of the body.

The deficiency of B12 can be corrected by eating nutritious food. Intake of meat, fish and dairy
products can reduce B12 deficiency. Eating green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits and fortified
cereals can increase folic acid levels in the body and in turn helps to improve B vitamin in the
body. A spoonful of caviar supplies the adult daily requirement of vitamin B-12.

If the problem is severe then it is necessary to consult a doctor. Doctor may suggest B12
supplements in the form of pills or shots. These days nasal sprays are also available in the market
to treat B12 vitamin deficiency.
