3. Start Menu & Task Bar
Locating Applications
• A major difference and feature of Vista compared to XP is the way the
Start Menu works. Windows Vista has a built in search to locate indexed
applications, filenames and contents within documents that can be used.
An example would be the Cisco Systems VPN client Hallmark used for
authenticating mobility to Hallmark Networks.
To locate an item in the start-menu type,
“VPN” (this pulls up the Cisco Systems
VPN Client) from here the application can
be opened or further commands like save
to desktop can be used or pinning to the
start-menu.
Pin Items to start menu
Not unlike Windows XP, Vista has included pinning items to
the start menu, to do so just hold the shift key while right-
clicking on an application and choose pin to start menu.
*The reverse to unpin is the same process on the item that is pinned
already, only this time choose Unpin to Start Menu.
Taskbar preferences
• As with Windows XP the taskbar can be
customized by right-clicking on the
start-menu then choosing properties.
To customize, click directly into the button Customize.

4. Customize allows for specific items to view as listed:
Display as a link: items chosen open in new
window
Display as a menu: items chosen open out on
the menu
Don’t display this item: will not show on the
Start-Menu
*the other tabs across the top allow for Control
over what items are in the Taskbar, Notification
Area and Toolbars.
Snipping Tool
Windows Vista has a new tool
for taking images of sections of
the screen called the “Snipping
tool”. To get to this just click on
the start-menu and search for
“snip”. When opening the Snip
tool it will grey out with the most
recent selection of a rectangle
(default), free-form, window, or
full-screen snip. To use the
rectangle or free-form snip, just
click and drag your mouse over
the desired area. After making
the snip the program displays
what was captured and there are
tools for highlighting areas, drawing with a pen tool, e-mailing, copying, or saving the
image. By default the image is copied to the clipboard when the snip is performed and
can be directly pasted into such programs as Word or Lotus Notes without having to save
the image first.
Windows AERO
AERO stands for Authentic, Energetic, Reflective and Open. This is the new look of
Windows with extra functionality

5. Such functions include:
New transparencies:
Such as windows borders.
Live Thumbnails:
Showing the contents of a window when a mouse is
moved over the program icon on the task bar.
Windows Flip 3D:
For switching windows with a 3D interface. When pressing the Windows key+Tab this
displays a preview of the active windows that can be switched to.

6. Alt-Tab changes: Alt-Tab
now displays a “Live View”
image of the program
window contents when
switching programs. It also
displays some information
about that window.
Desktop
Default-
At minimum the recycle bin is the only icon on
the installed desktop.
To add additional items right-click then choose
option, “Send To desktop”.
Resolution
Viewable area (changing resolution)
To change display settings, such as
screen resolution or font size: Right click on the
desktop and select “Personalize” or open the
control panel from start-menu and open the
Personalization option.

To change your viewable area,
select “Display settings” at the
bottom of the personalization
menu.
Here you can change your display resolution.
The higher the number the smaller everything
will appear on your screen.

7. Fonts
If after changing the resolution, the
fonts are still too small a system
wide change can update all fonts to a
larger DPI. (Larger font size
throughout)
In the left column of the
personalization menu select “Adjust
font size (DPI)”

Internet Explorer version 7
Tabbed Viewing
Feature allowing multiple tabbed sites to be loaded into one window for better
organization of open sites. Also tab control will recognize and separate (create a new
window) with tabs for intranet secured sites. By default only one tab will be open. A
new tab can be opened by clicking on the small tab to the right of another open tab or by
pressing the keys “Ctrl”+”T”

8. *Some Hallmark web applications may not be compatible with this feature.
To delete your Temporary Internet files or cookies you will need to go under the Internet
tools. This is located in the far right section of the Internet Explorer menu bar. First
click on Tools and then Internet Options.

Locating the Internet Explorer Favorites in Vista
Many people are used to clicking on the “favorites” menu item in previous versions of
Internet Explorer. This has changed in Vista. Internet Explorer 7 has a single star
designed as a Favorites link. Simply click on this and a list of your Internet Explorer
Favorites will display.

9. How to add network drives manually
First click on the new design start-menu for Microsoft Vista.
Right-click on “Computer” and then
click on “Map Network Drive…”
On the drop-down choose the Drive
(for letter assignment)
In the location Folder: type the drive
path that is needed.
Check on “Reconnect at logon”, if
this will be used multiple times on
this computer. Then click Finish.

10. Locating and adding compatible network printers.
Start by clicking on the Microsoft Windows Start-Menu
Once the view has been updated locate the Network option.
The next window that appears should
contain a search box, click the Search
Active Directory box.
A new box should come up
titled, “Find Users,
Contacts, and Groups”.
Click on the drop down
under Find: and select
Printers. The search can
be very descriptive
depending on how much
knowledge is known of the
printer type and location.

11. To search for printers that have the 4 Character designation such as KP06 just type KP06
in the Name location.
To search by location type the location of the printer. An example such as building 2480
Garden would be KC-2480-G. If more is known about the features then click on the
Features tab to narrow the search.
The next step for Vista Systems is to make sure when scrolling over the Server Name
listed mentions either Kcprint1.master or Kcprint2.master is selected as their the only
Vista certified print drivers in use. If there is either of the mentioned Server Names for
printers then double-click for install.
Lastly, verify that your default printer is setup properly. To do this go to the start-menu
and click on “Printers”. Once the correct printer is located you may make it your default
printer by either clicking on the “Set as Default” icon at the top or by right-clicking on
the printer and selecting “Set as Default”

12. Security
User Account Control
UAC (User Account Control) pop-up
windows and user access.
To help protect the stability of
software in the Vista environment
Hallmark-IT has determined all users
have standard rights due to Corporate IT Security Policy 141, which help protect and
prohibit against installing software without administrative access. Incase elevated access
is required the UAC will pop-up requesting additional rights. If such arises and the
product is currently supported by Hallmark-IT, contact the Central Helpline to verify and
have it installed according to software certification standards.
• Installing Certified Hardware Without Administrative Access
A new addition to Vista includes extended rights to users allowing device
hardware install such as printers, and USB “thumb drives” without
administrative access. To allow this process the types of devices need to
be preset and certified by Vista. The exception to this includes any
additional software installations like management software that still
requires elevated privileges (Administrative) to install.

13. Wireless
Accessing the wireless status and application (Airport/Home/Work/etc…)
• To access the wireless application go to
o Start-Menu
o Control-Panel
o Windows Mobility Center (or Windows Mobile PC
and then Mobility Center)

Once inside the wireless
network box click on the
Signal Bar icon.

14. Next click on the drop-down box and you can
choose Show Wireless only or just select a network
to connect to.
If needed, click on the cycling arrows to refresh the available
networks.
When you connect to the desired network, Vista will prompt for information on the
network type of Home, Work, Public Location, etc. Select the setting icon that you think
is most appropriate and continue with the connection.
Basic Troubleshooting
Try to access a site from the internet if it loads see if the
Provider requires a password or pay for use requirement. If not check and see if
Your wireless is on. (Reference above Verifying the wireless device is on and active)
