Viscosity is a fluid property that represents resistance to layers of fluid moving past one another. It arises due to shear stresses between layers moving at different velocities. Viscosity is proportional to shear stress and inversely proportional to velocity gradient. The constant of proportionality is the coefficient of dynamic viscosity or simply viscosity. Viscosity has SI units of Pa-s or kg/m-s. Kinematic viscosity is the ratio of dynamic viscosity to fluid density with units of m2/s. Newton's law of viscosity states shear stress is directly proportional to velocity gradient for Newtonian fluids. Viscosity decreases with increasing temperature for liquids but increases for gases.
