Viruddhashara is a unique concept in Ayurveda referring to the consumption of incompatible foods. Eating incompatible foods can cause health issues similar to poison by disrupting the body's equilibrium. Some examples of incompatible food combinations mentioned are milk with sour substances, fish with milk, and honey processed with heat. Consuming incompatible foods can lead to diseases like vomiting, inflammation, and madness. The treatment involves cessation of the incompatible foods and use of opposing foods and herbs to restore balance.

Ayurveda strongly believes in using drugs with particular tastes in treating diseases. This presentation will help you understand the basics of rasa and its applied aspects in planning treatment protocol.
Vipaka comes under the five concepts under the study of a dravya (Rasapanchakas). In Ayurveda the digestion & metabolism of any substance is explained in two stages:
Avasthapaka
Nishtapaka
Avasthapaka is the first phase considered as digestion.
In charaka the word “prapaka” is used as the synonym for avasthapaka.
Nishtapka or Vipaka is the second phase and considered as metabolism.
• Rasashastra deals with metallic, mineral and poisonous drugs.
• These drugs are pharmaceutically processed and rendered fit for internal administration.
• For the various processing of rasa uparasadi dhatus and for the preparation of medicines, specific apparatuses called ‘Yantras’ are needed.
• Metals and minerals are required to undergo certain processes like shodhana, jarana, marana, satwapatana etc before they could be administered into the body and all these processes could only be achieved with the help of yantras.
• For exploring and utilizing the knowledge of Rasasastra, a better understanding of yantras is needed.
• Textbooks of Ayurvediya Rasasastra including Rasatarangini, Rasaratna samuchaya, Rasarnavam and Rasendra Choodamani have been the sources of literature along with other published works on Rasasastra.
The concept of pathya apathya w.s.r. to charak samhitabrijeshbhu
Ayurveda has holistic and scientific approach in health management. It emphasizes much more on diet and regimen along with medicines. The diet and regimen which is beneficial to the body and gives the happiness to the mind is known as Pathya and opposite to that is known as Apathya. Most of the health problems develop due to the faulty eating habits and regimen. Ayurveda deals with the pathya vyavastha (planning of diet- dietetics) in a very scientific way. The planning of diet mentioned in our classical literature is very rational and based on certain principles. Lot of importance is given to the diet with regard to its processing, quality, quantity and so on.
Due consideration is given to the atmosphere, psychological condition, status of health, digestion etc. of the person while dealing with this issue. The diet should also be planned according to the age, season, habitat and the preference of the person.

No living being in this world is immortal , death is certain this day or other . But death can be delayed by eradicating diseases . Dehavedha is the important concept in Rasasastra , where the disease susceptible , mortal body can be transformed into an endurable disease free body , thereby granting longevity and divinity.
The word parihara states that avoidance of apathy a (bad diet/regimen) during and after shodhana. The Ahara and Vihara must be avoided during and after shodhana karma is called as parihara vishaya.During panchakarma therapies one should avoid excessive sitting, standing, speaking and riding, sleep
during day time, sexual intercourse, suppression of natural urges, cooling regimens, exposure to sun, grief,
anger and intake of untimely and unwholesome food.

Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.
Key Topics:
Olfactory Genes:
3% of the human genome accounts for olfactory genes.
400 genes for odorant receptors.
Olfactory Membrane:
Located in the superior part of the nasal cavity.
Medially: Folds downward along the superior septum.
Laterally: Folds over the superior turbinate and upper surface of the middle turbinate.
Total surface area: 5-10 square centimeters.
Olfactory Mucosa:
Olfactory Cells: Bipolar nerve cells derived from the CNS (100 million), with 4-25 olfactory cilia per cell.
Sustentacular Cells: Produce mucus and maintain ionic and molecular environment.
Basal Cells: Replace worn-out olfactory cells with an average lifespan of 1-2 months.
Bowman’s Gland: Secretes mucus.
Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.
Primitive, less old, and new olfactory systems with different path

RESULTS: Overall life span (LS) was 2252.1±1742.5 days and cumulative 5-year survival (5YS) reached 73.2%, 10 years – 64.8%, 20 years – 42.5%. 513 LCP lived more than 5 years (LS=3124.6±1525.6 days), 148 LCP – more than 10 years (LS=5054.4±1504.1 days).199 LCP died because of LC (LS=562.7±374.5 days). 5YS of LCP after bi/lobectomies was significantly superior in comparison with LCP after pneumonectomies (78.1% vs.63.7%, P=0.00001 by log-rank test). AT significantly improved 5YS (66.3% vs. 34.8%) (P=0.00000 by log-rank test) only for LCP with N1-2. Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: phase transition (PT) early-invasive LC in terms of synergetics, PT N0—N12, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells- CC and blood cells subpopulations), G1-3, histology, glucose, AT, blood cell circuit, prothrombin index, heparin tolerance, recalcification time (P=0.000-0.038). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and PT early-invasive LC (rank=1), PT N0—N12 (rank=2), thrombocytes/CC (3), erythrocytes/CC (4), eosinophils/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), segmented neutrophils/CC (8), stick neutrophils/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10); leucocytes/CC (11). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (area under ROC curve=1.0; error=0.0).
CONCLUSIONS: 5YS of LCP after radical procedures significantly depended on: 1) PT early-invasive cancer; 2) PT N0--N12; 3) cell ratio factors; 4) blood cell circuit; 5) biochemical factors; 6) hemostasis system; 7) AT; 8) LC characteristics; 9) LC cell dynamics; 10) surgery type: lobectomy/pneumonectomy; 11) anthropometric data. Optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for LC are: 1) screening and early detection of LC; 2) availability of experienced thoracic surgeons because of complexity of radical procedures; 3) aggressive en block surgery and adequate lymph node dissection for completeness; 4) precise prediction; 5) adjuvant chemoimmunoradiotherapy for LCP with unfavorable prognosis.

Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

2. Introduction
Food is an indispensible part of life.
Food – powerful source of energy.
Ahara - trayopastambha.
In Ayurveda – importance of food :
Asta vidhi visheshayatana and Ahara vidhi
vidhana.
Ahara – 2 types: Hita & Ahita.
Hitahara - प्राणिनाां प्रािसांज्ञकानाां प्रािमाचक्षते कशलााः॥
ु
Ahitahara – affects the equilibrium of body
and mind, resulting in ill health.
Viruddhahara is a unique concept of
Ayurveda.
3. Viruddhahara affects the body by causing the
effects similar to visha & garavisha.
Incompatibility is the result of unsuitable
combination, contradictory qualities and faulty
processes.
Importance of dietic rules- bestows health.
Milk, honey, ghee are some of the substances
used in diet since ancient times. Certain
precautionary measures that are emphasized
for the intake of these foods are not followed in
present scenario. Hence the proper knowledge
regarding such incompatible foods is necessary
to maintain the health of an individual.
4. DERIVATION :

10. Food Incompatibility:
• Not being suitable for combination.
• Unsuitable through chemical action/interaction.
• Antagonistic action.
Food allergy/Hypersensitivity reaction:
• An allergic reaction resulting from ingestion of
food to which person is sensitive.
Food intolerance:
• An abnormal non-immunologic response to
ingested food.
• Pharmacologic/metabolic/toxic.
17. Both matsya & kshreera : madhura in rasa
and vipaka abhishyandi strotorodha.
Opposite veerya vitiates rakta.
Among matsya – specifically mentioned
chilichima maha abhishyandi
amavisha kastasadhya.
18. सिं च अम्लां द्रिमद्रिां च पयसा सह विरुद्धम ् ।
Rasa & veerya viruddha.
In general – milk+sour substances
curdling/fermentation.
21. qualities of ksheera and moolaka
kheera moolaka
Rasa - madhura katu
Veerya - sheeta ushna
Vipaka - madhura katu
Sushrutha’s opinion of rasa viruddha can
also be applied here.
Thus it is viruddha by rasa, veerya & vipaka.
22. मधु चोष्िां उष्िातवथय च मधु मरिाय ।
मधु पीत्किा उषिोदकम ् ।
The harmful effects of ushna samskara of
madhu is proved by experimental study.
29. Viruddha does not affect the following individuals:
• व्यायाम स्थनग्ध दीप्तास्ग्न ियथि बलशाभलनाम ् ।
विरोध्यवप न पीडायै सात्कम्यमल्पां च भोजनम ् ॥(अ.हृ.सू ७)

30. discussion
अन्नात ् भूतातन जायन्ते ।
जातातन अन्नेन िधवते ॥
आहार सम्भिां िथतु रोगथतु आहार सांभिाः ।
Discussion on definition:
Compared with visha & gara – the effect of
viruddhahara will be sudden/delayed in onset.
तनविवष द्रव्यकृतां गरसांज्ञकम ् ।
Majority of them shows their effect lately i.e
cumulative effect.
31. The definition of ahita as per Charaka and the
definition of viruddha as per Vriddha
Vagbhata are similar.
Discussion on types of viruddha:
The various types of viruddha which are
mentioned by Sushrutha, Vagbhata can be
incorporated under the 18 types of viruddha
explained by acharya Charaka.
Only Sushrutha has explained the different
incompatible combinations of the shad rasas.
As ahara is rasa pradhana, this also has to be
given prime importance.
32. Common viruddhahara in day to day life:
Milk shake, fruit salad(rasa & veerya viruddha).
Intake of juice/ice cream/alcohol after hot & spicy
meal(upachara viruddha).
Taking bath after food(vidhi viruddha).
Taking cold water bath after exposure to sunlight.
Taking milk/tea/coffee after consuming fish(guna
viruddha).
Consuming curd at night (krama viruddha).
Honey with hot water(samyoga viruddha).
Cooked food – refrigeration – again heating
(samskara viruddha).
Preservatives/coloring agents.
33. Role in manifestation of diseases:
Viruddhahara – as a nidana of various diseases.
In kusta nidana-
विरोधीन्यन्नपानातन.....शीतोष्िलांघनाहारान ् क्रमां मुक्त्किा
तनषेििम ्। ....घमवश्रमभयातावनाां द्रतां शीतम्बु सेविनाम ्…
ु
Viruddhahara is mentioned first, by this we can
understand the role of viruddha in disease
manifestation.
Amavata nidana – विरुद्धाहार चेष्टथय मन्दाग्ने.... Here
also the viruddhahara is mentioned first.
Viruddhashana is one among nidanas of
vatarakta.
The autoimmune disorders like RA, psoriasis,
SLE can be considered here.
34. Discussion on chikitsa:
Nidana parivarjana is the main line of treatment.
Importance of shodhana: as the definition of
viruddha says-
उत्कक्लेश्य दोषान ् न हरे त ् द्रव्यां यत्कतत्कसमासताः।
विरुद्धां तवद्ध धातनाां प्रत्कयनीकतया स्थितम ् ॥ (अ.सां.सू ९/२६)
ू
thus shodhana is the proper line of treatment as
it does the dosha nirharana.
Importance of padamshika krama – there will not
be any recurrence of apachita doshas & upachita
gunas become stable.
By adopting the dinacharya, rutucharya, achara
rasayana one can avoid most of the health
problems.
35. Exception for general rule:
In jaatakarma samskara sushrutha has advised
to give madhu & ghrutha with ananta or
lakshmana. Here honey + ghee is given in
alpamatra, hence does not shows any harmful
effects, instead it may act as a triggering factor
& helps in initiating the body’s immune
mechanism.
The ushna madhu prayoga is done with
vamaka dravyas which are given to induce the
vamana, here the effect of viruddha may not
cause harmful effects on the body because it is
expelled out from the body without undergoing
the process of digestion.
36. The intake of milk after having haritaka varga/
