1. Prayer
O God,
Wisdom of the universe,
you bear the pain of your people.
Grant us the gift of wisdom,
that we may discern your way
and live justly and graciously
amid the struggles of this world.
Amen.
4. Anyone who sets himself up as âreligiousâ
by talking a good game is self-deceived.
This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air.
Real religion, the kind that passes muster
before God the Father, is this: Reach out
to the homeless and loveless in their plight,
and guard against corruption from
the godless world.
JAMES 1:26-27 (MSG)
5. My dear friends, donât let public opinion influence
how you live out our glorious, Christ-originated
faith.
If a man enters your church wearing an expensive
suit, and a street person wearing rags comes in
right after him, and you say to the man in the suit,
âSit here, sir; this is the best seat in the house!â and
either ignore the street person or say, âBetter sit
here in the back row,â havenât you segregated
Godâs children and proved that you are judges
JAMES 2:1-4 (MSG)
6. Listen, dear friends. Isnât it clear by now that
God operates quite differently? He chose the
worldâs down-and-out as the kingdomâs first
citizens,
with full rights and privileges. This kingdom
is promised to anyone who loves God.
And here you are abusing these same citizens!
Isnât it the high and mighty who exploit you,
who use the courts to rob you blind?
Arenât they the ones who scorn the new nameâ
JAMES 2:5-7 (MSG)
7. You do well when you complete the Royal Rule
of the Scriptures: âLove others as you love
yourself.â But if you play up to these so-called
important people, you go against the Rule and
stand convicted by it.
You canât pick and choose in these things,
specializing in keeping one or two things
in Godâs law and ignoring others. The same
God who said, âDonât commit adultery,â
also said, âDonât murder.â
JAMES 2:8-10 (MSG)
8. If you donât commit adultery but go ahead and
murder, do you think your non-adultery will cancel
out your murder? No, youâre a murderer, period.
Talk and act like a person expecting to be judged
by the Rule that sets us free. For if you refuse
to act kindly, you can hardly expect to be treated
kindly. Kind mercy wins over harsh judgment
every time.
JAMES 2:11-13 (MSG)
9. Dear friends, do you think youâll get anywhere in
this
if you learn all the right words but never do
anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate
that a person really has it? For instance, you come
upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-
starved and say,
âGood morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ!
Be filled with the Holy Spirit!â and walk off without
providing so much as a coat or a cup of soupâ
JAMES 2:14-17 (MSG)
10. âThere is no point in saying to someone
without clothes or food, âbe warm and full.â
Those words donât do anything to help.
They need to be translated into action.
The âfaithâ which isnât enough is mere
verbal formula. It wonât do simply to tick
the box saying âI believe in Godâ and hope
that will do. It wonât.â
N.T. WRIGHT
12. âThere is no point in saying to a pregnant
woman in poverty, âhave your baby,
and be well.â Those words donât do
anything to help. They need to be
translated into more consistent action.
The âfaithâ which isnât enough is mere
verbal formula. It wonât do simply to tick
the box saying âI am pro-lifeâ and hope
that will do. It wonât.â

13. Educate yourself on the specifics of Texasâ
new abortion law, and then ask these questions:
- Is there anything in the spirit of this law
that reflects mercy winning over judgment?
- Is there anything in the spirt of this law
that reflects loving neighbor as oneâs self?
- Does it reflect God-talk OR God-action?
- What should the âconsistent ethic of life/
solidarityâ mean for how we treat and
care for pregnant mothers?

14. Credited with articulating the Catholic
commitment to âa consistent ethic of lifeâ
or âa consistent ethic of solidarityâ
CARDINAL JOSEPH BERNARDIN
15. â(the consistent ethic) is a human solidarityâŠ
that calls us to abandon no one in need,
whether citizen or immigrant; a solidarity
that compels us toâŠhonor and protect
all life, especially the unborn and the
vulnerable, to strive for justiceâŠand work for
freedom and peace throughout the world.â
CARDINAL JOSEPH BERNARDIN
16. âThose who defend the right to life of the
weakest among us (the unborn) must be
equally visible in support of the quality
of life of the powerless among us:
the old and the young, the hungry
and the homeless, the undocumented
immigrant and the unemployed worker.â

18. Many who consider themselves âpro choiceâ
find the label âpro lifeâ somewhat ironic given
how so many âpro lifeâ people also vigorously
support the death penalty, supported the use
of torture during the War in Afghanistan/Iraq,
ignore life-related issues surrounding climate
change, etc. What can you do to apply your âpro
lifeâ ethic more consistently when it
comes to other areas of social life outside
of the abortion issue?
IF YOU LEAN âRIGHTâ
19. Many who consider themselves âpro lifeâ
genuinely believe that âlife begins at
conception.â Even if you disagree with
that perspective, can you at least respect
their conviction that, based on that belief,
abortion means the ending of a human life,
and that is something to be taken seriously?
IF YOU LEAN âLEFTâ
20. As Americans, it might be tempting to approach
this subject from a social or political perspective,
but we are not first and foremost Americans.
We are, first and foremost, followers of Jesus, and
it is from that vantage point that we must seek to
frame our thoughts and perspectives
on this topic. And WHATEVER conclusions
we come to, we MUST live them out
with love, for God AND for neighborâŠ
NO MATTER HOW YOU LEANâŠ
21. Holy Lord, maker of us all,
you call us to love our neighbors as ourselves
and teach us that faith without works is dead.
Open us to the opportunities for ministry
that lie before us, where faith and words
and the need of our neighbor come together
in name of Jesus Christ, our Savior.
Amen.
Benediction
