1. PRAYER
Shepherd of Israel,
hear our prayer
as your Son heard the plea
of the criminal crucified with him.
Gather into Christ's holy reign
the broken, the sorrowing, and the sinner,
that all may know wholeness, joy, and forgiveness.
Amen.

7. 1 SAMUEL 8:1-7
So all the elders of Israel gathered together
and came to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him,
“You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways;
now appoint a king to lead us, such as
all the other nations have.” But when they said,
“Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel;
so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him:
“Listen to all that the people are saying to you;
it is not you they have rejected, but they have
rejected me as their king.
8. 1 SAMUEL 8:8-11a
“As they have done from the day I brought them
up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and
serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly
and let them know what the king who will
reign over them will claim as his rights.”
Samuel told all the words of the Lord to
the people who were asking him for a king.
He said, “This is what the king who will
reign over you will claim as his rights:
9. 1 SAMUEL 8:11b-18
(Really long list of bad things
that Deacon will read so
it doesn’t take like 20 slides!)
10. 1 SAMUEL 8:19-22a
But the people refused to listen to Samuel.
“No!” they said. “We want a king over us.
Then we will be like all the other nations,
with a king to lead us and to go out before us
and fight our battles.” When Samuel heard
all that the people said, he repeated it before
the LORD. The LORD answered, “Listen to them
and give them a king.”
11. (Though) hierarchies, oppressive means,
and exploitation existed in
the society and economy prior to the
onset of the kingdom, the centralized
state introduced new structures of control
with extraordinary reach and impact. Each
of the first three (kings), Saul, David, and
Solomon, has an auspicious beginning in
line with
pro-monarchic visions, but the latter parts
of their reigns (display clear) antimonarchic
sentiments.
12. MATTHEW 2:2
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus
was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men
from the East came to Jerusalem, asking,
‘Where is the child who has been born
king of the Jews? For we observed his star
at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’
13. MATTHEW 21:1-5
When they had come near Jerusalem…Jesus sent
two disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the village
ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey
tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them
to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this,
“The Lord needs them.” And he will send them
immediately. This took place to fulfil what had
been spoken through the prophet, saying, ‘Tell the
daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey…
14. 1 TIMOTHY 1:15-17
The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance,
that Christ Jesus came into the world to save
sinners—of whom I am the foremost. But for
that very reason I received mercy, so that in me,
as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the
utmost patience, making me an example to those
who would come to believe in him for eternal life. To
the King of the ages, immortal,
invisible, the only God, be honor and glory
for ever and ever. Amen.

25. Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble
thanks for all your goodness
and loving-kindness to us and to all
whom you have made. We bless you
for our creation, preservation, and all
the blessings of this life; but above all
for you immeasurable love in the redemption
of the world by our
Lord Jesus Christ; for the means
of grace, and for the hope of glory…
26. And, we pray, give us such an awareness
of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts
we may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,
and by walking before you in holiness
and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom,
with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor
and glory throughout all ages.
Amen.
