This document contains a prayer, scripture passages from the books of John and 1 John, and commentary discussing the key themes of love and obedience. It discusses how Jesus calls his followers friends rather than servants, and how we can know we are his friends by keeping his commandment to love one another. It emphasizes that belief in Jesus and obedience to his commands of love for God and others are inseparable, and that God's commandments to love are not burdensome but lead to victory over the world.
Not only do we identify with Christ, but Christ identifies with us. We are the body of Christ as He has chosen to make Himself known through the church.

We Love Because 1 John 4:19-21 Adapted from a Steve Shepherd sermon http://www.sermoncentral.com/sermons/we-love-because-steve-shepherd-sermon-on-christian-love-148977.asp
In times like these ones, we need to have a clear definition of what Love is and what is not.
Nothing better that the Bible to help us understand what love is.
The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

1. Prayer
O God, you have made of one blood
all the peoples of the earth and have
sent your blessed Son to preach peace,
to those who are far off, and to those who are near.
Grant that people everywhere would seek after you
and find you. Bring the nations into your fold.
Pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the
coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
5. As the Father has loved me, so I have loved
you; abide in my love. If you keep my
commandments, you will abide in my love,
just as I have kept my Father's
commandments and abide in his love.
I have said these things to you so that my joy
may be in you, and that your joy may be
complete. This is my commandment, that you
love one another as I have loved you. No one
has greater love than this, to lay down one's
life for one's friends. You are my friends if you
JOHN 15:9-14
6. I do not call you servants any longer, because
the servant does not know what the master
is doing; but I have called you friends, because
I have made known to you everything that
I have heard from my Father. You did not
choose me but I chose you. And I appointed
you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last,
so that the Father will give you whatever
you ask him in my name. I am giving you
these commands so that you may love one
another.
JOHN 15:15-17

10. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ
has been born of God, and everyone who
loves the parent loves the child. By this we
know that we love the children of God, when
we love God and obey his commandments.
For the love of God is this, that we obey his
commandments.
1 JOHN 5:1-3a
11. …belief and practice are
inseparable. The sincerity
of one’s beliefs about Jesus
is demonstrated by one’s
love for God’s other children,
and (love) for God is
expressed in obedience.
12. And his commandments are not burdensome,
for whatever is born of God conquers the
world. And this is the victory that conquers the
world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the
world
but the one who believes that Jesus is the
Son of God? This is the one who came by
water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the
water only but with the water and the blood.
And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the
Spirit is the truth.
1 JOHN 5:3b-6
13. No other god, no other power,
no other being in all the world
loves like this, gives like this,
dies like this. All others win
victories by fighting; this one,
by suffering. All other gods
exercise power by killing;
this one, by dying.

17. LOVE is:
Engaging your will for the good of
another,
often at your own expense
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
So LOVE looks LIKE:
Any action were you engage your will
for the good of another
18. EXAMPLES might INCLUDE:
o Wearing a mask and/or getting vaccinated
o Learning your partner’s “love language”
and attempting to speak theirs, not yours
o Paying for someone’s bill/groceries/meal
o Genuinely seeking to grasp another’s
perspective
o Jumping on a trampoline when you’re tired
o Speaking up in the face of injustice
WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE?
19. SOUL TRAINING EXERCISE
LOVE someone THIS week:
Engage your will for the good of
another;
be willing to give of your own expense
for someone else’s benefit in one way
or another, big or small, and know that
when you do, you’re also loving God
20. Benediction
Hear O Israel,
the Lord our God, the Lord is one.
You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, with all your soul,
with all your mind, and with all your strength,
and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no other commandment
greater than these.
Amen.
