4.11.1 AB Volvo Progress and Key Developments
Volvo's updates to the already new XC90 in 2017 included its latest step towards autonomous driving
– Pilot Assist II. This will be standard equipment on the SUV in selected markets and will be mirrored
on the S90 sedan and V90 wagon later, according to the company’s press release.
Pilot Assist II adds steering assistance to adaptive cruise control, creating a semi-autonomous
highway driving system that – like Tesla's Autopilot system – controls acceleration, braking, and
steering to follow traffic flow within the lane on well-marked highways. The system can operate at
speeds up to 81 mph (120 km/h) and does not require a lead car as have other Volvo systems in
development.
The driver can override the system anytime, of course, by simply deactivating cruise control (with
the brake or cancel/off button) or by accelerating or turning the steering wheel. Letting go of the
steering wheel for a few seconds also deactivates the system. To change lanes, however, using the
turn signal and wheel to make the lane change does not override Pilot Assist II.
Other new additions include PowerPulse for the diesel variant. This is designed to eliminate the turbo
drag found in most diesel engines by adding an electric compressor and pressurized two-litre air
tank to the powertrain. Fresh air coming into the vehicle via its air filter is compressed and stored in
the tank. When the throttle is pressed for fast acceleration, the compressed air is released into the

exhaust manifold to quickly spool the turbo for immediate boosting. Also added is a new update for
Volvo's City Safety. This standard collision avoidance system, which includes pedestrian and small
vehicle (bicycle) avoidance, is now updated to include large animals.
In order to test the autonomous features of the new XC90, Volvo launched the UK’s biggest
autonomous driving trial in London in 2017, called Drive Me London. The Swedish car maker
supplied members of the public with autonomous technology-equipped XC90s in order to collect
real-world driving data to further develop its software for future production models. The drivers will
be able to use each XC90 as their own daily vehicle, with Volvo saying the approach allows it to
collect the most realistic data possible. The alternative would be to use controlled test environments,
but Volvo says this would provide it with unrealistic data.
In January 2017, Volvo conducted test drive for 100 Volvo XC90 equipped with self-driving
systems on the roads of Gothenburg, Sweden.
In May 2017, the company tested autonomous truck in ore mine located in Sweden. This will allow
mining companies to enhance safety and productivity.
In June 2018, Volvo announced plan to launch self-driving car by 2021. Also, the autonomous
driving system would be deployed in Volvo’s next generation of XC90 SUVs.
In September 2018, the company unveiled its concept 360c fully autonomous vehicle that serve as
mobile bedroom as well.
4.11.2 AB Volvo Alliance
Volvo Cars collaborated with Microsoft to jointly develop next generation automotive technologies.
Areas of future collaboration between the two companies could include autonomous driving
technologies and the utilisation of data generated from connected cars to create new services. Volvo
Cars is a pioneer in car safety and is leading the way when it comes to connected cars and
autonomous driving, according to a press release from Volvo.
Furthermore, Volvo Cars and Autoliv, the automotive safety technology company, two of the world’s
leaders in automotive safety, have agreed to work together on the ground-breaking Drive Me project,
the world’s first large-scale autonomous driving initiative. The two companies will work together to
share research and development into the latest safety technologies and engineers and other industry
experts from both companies will collaborate to push forward the introduction of active safety
systems. Drive Me is a broad collaboration of a number of public and private sector participants,
including Volvo Cars, the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency,
Chalmers University, Lindholmen Science Park and the City of Gothenburg.

In January 2016, Volvo, Ford, Google, Lyft, and Uber have formed Self-Driving Coalition for Safer
Streets (SDCSS) “to work with lawmakers, regulators, and the public to realize the safety and societal
benefits of self-driving vehicles,” the group said in a statement. The group persuades authorities to
speed up the regulation process regarding autonomous vehicles in the US.
With a reputation for safety innovations, Volvo labelled its autonomous vehicle endeavours
“Intellisafe,” with the goal of making Volvo cars “deathless” by 2020, when the company fully rolls
out these features to the public.
