As Media studies
Preliminary Task 2
Production and Evaluation
Post Production of Editing Process
I initially used Pinnacle 15 for rough editing but
after viewing the footage. I realized that sound
corrections need to be done so I decided to use
Vegas Pro because it is technically more advance
than Pinnacle 15, so I am able to adjust sound level
and complete the Post-Production.
Preliminary Task Evaluation
In this Preliminary Task Evaluation I will point out and analyze key
parts and stages that I have used in order to complete this introduction
project of media studies coursework.
My first task was to create a photo story that follows pre-determined set
of shots in order to illustrate a simplistic story line.
The key areas in this task were the use of common types of shots,
framing and picture composition. Once this was used I was able to
produce a photo story.
During the filming of the story I had to focus on depicting
understanding and ability to frame the shot and desired subject.
Applying general principles in photography, called the rule of
thirds, I was able to make presentable looking and professional
looking shots. For better understanding I have focused mainly of
shot types and angles. Using a character I have realized that there
are three main shot types and angles.
Types: Long, Medium and close.
Angles: High, Medium and Low.
Long shots tend to depict the Location and area the subject is in. Close
up tend to communicate emotion through expressions.
Medium shots use both elements of long shots and close up. As it
shows location and expressions of the subject.
In my photo story I used various shot angles to depict importance and
dominance. Low angle is used to depict that the subject in this shot is
powerful and dominant. High angle is used to convey how the character
is shot is being dominate and how little power the subject has.
The main part of preliminary task was to create a short video
sequence following mainstream film narrative and compositional
structures. The Video sequence is going to exhibit my
understanding of the three following techniques.
• The 180-degree rule is a video filming guideline that states that two characters in a
scene should maintain the same left/right relationship.
• Shot/reverse shot is when one character is shown looking at the other, and the other
character is shown looking back at the first character.
• Match on action is when an action that begins in one shot and ends in the next shot.
• Before producing this video I have carried out secondary research. This
research invloved looking and studying examples of similair students
previous video works and existing videos that portrays the mentioned video
techniques.
• The 180-degree rule is a video filming guideline that states that two characters in a scene should
maintain the same left/right relationship to one another and stay in a 180 degree Field and must not
pass through the imaginary line. When the rule is broken it create chaos and confusion because natural
view has be disturbed. This can be used to represent the chaos happening during that moment in the
scene.
• Shot reverse shot is a very important editing technique when filming dialogues. This process is
integrated with the 180 degree rule. The shots you should have for a basic shot reverse shot are: a two-
shot of the characters usually in wide or medium shot. This style of continuity editing makes shows
viewers that two character are talking to each other. Viewers don't recognize the cuts as they are very
fluid transitions
• The shots you should have for a basic shot reverse shot are: a two-shot of the characters usually in wide
or medium shot. This style of continuity editing makes shows viewers that two character are talking to
each other. Viewers don't recognize the cuts as they are very fluid transitions
Once I have completed secondary research I began with the pre-production stage in
order to produce a video sequence that contains all this media techniques. At the start I
thought of various ideas that could be implemented in this video sequence. I have
decided to continue with the Student Life Trials. This sequence incorporates visual
techniques and creative ideas.
The first step in the pre-production was to come write down a film synopsis. With the
Student Life Trials I have implemented key elements: Characters, storyline, actions,
reactions and major incidents. From the start to finish it was in chronological order. The
follow up step was to write video sequence script and complete the story board
following acceptable and common script and story board standards. After completing
the script I evaluated screenplay and pictured it in terms of separate shots that can be
visually translated into individual storyboard panels.
In the creation of the story board I had to take into consideration
key factors in regards to:
• Location and setting
• Actors appearing in the shot and direction
• Props
• Type of shots, angle and movement
Once finishing the storyboard I have continued with the last stage
of pre-production which involved: actor and location search,
equipment and props list. This was a necessary stage which was
significant in order to help me plan and foresee any challenge
when filming on locations.
The Production stage was made within two day and it was filmed
at a bus station and a school. My main concern was the
availability of the characters as they had different obligations.
However I was able to properly plan when the actors were going
to be and constantly remind them when and where they were
going to filmed.
After the Production Stage I continued to the post-production
section of this task. I viewed the footage and so called rough
editing. In the editing of this video sequence I have used a
semiprofessional video editing software.
In this task I have used the following camera techniques: Panning,
Close up, Over the shoulder, Low angle, Esatabilishing shot,
Meduim shot and Two shot. When these techniques were
implemented, a sense of movement was created and also
continuity.
I have learnt to the use the following continuity rules: Shot
Reverse shot, 180 degree rule and match on action. I
implemented these rules in order create a more poignant image
of actions that took place.
The shot reverse shot estabilishes the speakers facial expressions
throughout the conversation.
The 180 degree rule was used to maintain the actors postions
within the scene.
A match on action is used to create a better picture of continutiy.
In this task I have used Pinnacle 15 and Vegas Pro.
In post-production I have learnt to import, cut, render, add
transition and mark in and out. I have used these tools to import
footage and place the footage together on the timeline on the
basis of the cutting out the unnecessary clips and adding
transitions to create a better continuity sequence. If I was to
repeat this project again, I would do somethings differently.
Firstly I would have taken more scene where I would include
panning.
Secondly I would have added more close up shots of characters
as I have taken too many meduim and long shots.
Lastly I would have include more shot reverse shot scenes.

After completing the script I evaluated screenplay and pictured it in terms of separate shots that can be visually translated into individual storyboard panels.
  • 10. In the creation of the story board I had to take into consideration key factors in regards to: • Location and setting • Actors appearing in the shot and direction • Props • Type of shots, angle and movement Once finishing the storyboard I have continued with the last stage of pre-production which involved: actor and location search, equipment and props list. This was a necessary stage which was significant in order to help me plan and foresee any challenge when filming on locations.
  • 11. The Production stage was made within two day and it was filmed at a bus station and a school. My main concern was the availability of the characters as they had different obligations. However I was able to properly plan when the actors were going to be and constantly remind them when and where they were going to filmed. After the Production Stage I continued to the post-production section of this task. I viewed the footage and so called rough editing. In the editing of this video sequence I have used a semiprofessional video editing software.
  • 12. In this task I have used the following camera techniques: Panning, Close up, Over the shoulder, Low angle, Esatabilishing shot, Meduim shot and Two shot. When these techniques were implemented, a sense of movement was created and also continuity. I have learnt to the use the following continuity rules: Shot Reverse shot, 180 degree rule and match on action. I implemented these rules in order create a more poignant image of actions that took place. The shot reverse shot estabilishes the speakers facial expressions throughout the conversation. The 180 degree rule was used to maintain the actors postions within the scene. A match on action is used to create a better picture of continutiy. In this task I have used Pinnacle 15 and Vegas Pro.
  • 13. In post-production I have learnt to import, cut, render, add transition and mark in and out. I have used these tools to import footage and place the footage together on the timeline on the basis of the cutting out the unnecessary clips and adding transitions to create a better continuity sequence. If I was to repeat this project again, I would do somethings differently. Firstly I would have taken more scene where I would include panning. Secondly I would have added more close up shots of characters as I have taken too many meduim and long shots. Lastly I would have include more shot reverse shot scenes.
