VIDEO CAMERAS
DSLR
“DIGITAL SLR CAMERAS”
• DSLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex
• DSLR Cameras have a wide selection of lenses that can be used and can be quite
cheaper in comparison to other cameras, especially due to the quality that you receive.
• DSLR cameras usually always tend to have a high resolution, especially when using a
newer model.
• These cameras include a LCD screen, meaning you can slip the screen round so you
can record and see yourself at the same time.
• Autofocus is a another main feature of this type of camera.
• DSLR cameras also have editable frame rates. 24p (or 24fps) will give you a cinematic
look, as this is the classic frame rate of motion picture film. 30p is a good all-around
option, while 60p is noticeably smoother. Once you get higher than this, into 120p and
up your video will become slow motion.
DSLR
PROS AND CONS
Pros:
• DSLR Cameras are quite large and therefore
have a larger sensor
• Perform well in low light
• Have a high resolution
• Fast auto-focus
• Customisable settings
Cons:
• Quite large, bulky and heavier than some
alternatives and therefore more difficult to
use when on the go
• Louder than alternatives
• Although they shoot video footage, their
video quality is somewhat lacking (as they
have to deal with contrast-detection focus)
MOBILE PHONES
• Have built in microphones
• Work better in lighter areas
• Have optical lenses zoom feature
• Can edit the video directly on the device using editing apps
• Lack quality due to limited amount of pixels
MOBILE PHONES
PROS AND CONS
Pros:
• Small, light and portable, therefore easier to
carry around and shoot anything, even on the
go
• Always easily available (usually carry it around
everywhere with you)
• Can edit your photos and videos on the device
as soon as you take them (can download editing
apps onto your phone)
• Can share your footage immediately straight
from the device
• Photos and videos are automatically backed up
• Simple and quick to use
Cons:
• The better the camera on the phone, the more expensive
it is
• Small
• Lacks professionalism
• Struggles shooting in low light (due to its size)
• Non-ergonomic shape is difficult to grip (photography
isn’t the devices main problem and therefore isn’t its main
priority)
• Limited controls (use manual mode for these cameras and
therefore have limited customisable settings, for example
the aperture cannot be changed)
• Uses digital zoom (which is much more pixelated than
optical)
• Limited control over flash
360º CAMERAS
• Most commonly have two lenses
• Use fish eye lenses to capture around 200 degrees of image per lens
• Combined with both lenses, each lense will capture around 400 degrees which
overlaps, ensuring all 360 degrees of captured (sometimes the camera automatically
overlaps, sometimes it has to be edited together after being recorded)
• 360 cameras need to be small, compact, affordable and easy to use if they are to be
attractive to the consumer market. It’s for this reason that the majority of 360
cameras use small lenses that are commonly used in action cameras and even
webcams
360º CAMERAS
PROS AND CONS
Pros:
• Can shoot all scenery and the space that
surrounds it
• Records realistic images as if you were really
there (as if you can relive the memories)
• Don’t need to adjust composition or camera
settings
• Can be viewed on computers, smartphones,
using projectors or using a Virtual Reality
headset
Cons:
• Photographer appears in the images/videos
• Can’t zoom
• Not suited to capturing individual subjects
• Lacks focus (can be a bit overwhelming and
people could miss the main part of the image
that you are trying to capture, if there is one)
• Can’t capture details
DRONES
• Mainly used to show a birds eye view or capture high angles or replace
the crane
• They are also used to create orbit shots and fly-through videos
• One of the only ways to shoot aerial footage (alternatives, such as using
helicopters, is much more expensive)
• Can film in both large and small, confined spaces
DRONE CAMERAS
PROS AND CONS
Pros:
• Autonomous view
• Easy to change settings
• Adds value to the quality of work
• Cheaper and easier than hiring a manned
aircraft to record footage
• Can fly in areas where it is difficult to access
with larger cameras or with a manned aircraft
Cons:
• Can cause damage to property and possibly
injure people
• Privacy issues
• Still quite expensive
• Limited flexibility (to focal length)
• Requires some expertise
Click for drone footage example:
3D
• A 3D camera is an imaging device that enables the perception of depth
in images to replicate three dimensions (as experienced through human
binocular vision)
• Some of these cameras require two or more lenses so that more than
one point of view can be recorded at once, while other cameras with one
individual lense will just shift its position
