Jessica Bennett is currently studying towards a Master of Building Science at Victoria University of Wellington's School of Architecture, researching the affect that apartment design has on occupant health, comfort and well-being. Previously she has completed a Bachelor of Building Science with Honours researching apartment design, indoor air quality and New Zealand Building Code regulations. From 2006 she has worked part-time at BRANZ as a Building Performance Scientist, undertaking weathertightness assessments for Appraisal Certificates as well as simulation work on indoor environmental quality (IEQ), energy efficiency and climate change.
Jessica's interests include apartment design & refurbishment, occupant health, comfort & well-being, and the IEQ of buildings. Her role in The Plant Room (Wellington SHaC Team) involves providing technical information and advice as well as undertaking modelling and simulation of the proposed design.

Solar water heating for aquaculture: a case study of FinlandLuis Ram Rojas-Sol
The technical and economic challenges associated with using solar thermal systems for heating water in large-scale aquaculture applications in a cold climate country are addressed in this paper. Policies of using solar thermal heating for large aquaculture farms and the corresponding potential benefits to counteract global challenges, such as reducing CO2 emissions, are presented with a case study in Finland, where using solar water heating for aquaculture at large scale is not common. The original design characteristics of the farm had been proposed in earlier work and are based on the Danish Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS), where water is treated and recirculated to reduce both water and energy consumption. The farm has twenty-four tanks with a total capacity of 3240 m3. In this paper, the cost and benefits of the original system will be reconstructed to adopt an arrangement of glazed solar collectors to supply a fraction (i.e., solar fraction < 100%) of the heating demand in the farm (originally supplied by electricity). Scenarios with different solar fractions are assessed to determine the effect on the Net Present Value (NPV) of the project. Accordingly, the optimum mix of solar fraction and electric energy fraction is chosen based on the economic feasibility, while the corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions is reported. Next, the effect of uncertainty of capital and operation and maintenance costs on the NPV and payback time is examined. Finally, national policies, such as increasing grants on capital costs and reducing the interest rate, are proposed to provide a more attractive return and a lower risk to private fish farm investors in order to increase dependence on solar thermal heating, favouring these projects in Finland.
Potential waste, water, and energy savings were identified for hotel properties in Minnesota. Average resource use footprints and benchmarks were generated after analysis of utility bill data.
The standard practice hot yoga studio design has an operating carbon intensity 8 times greater than regular studios. In absolute terms, a 200m2 studio has the same annual carbon footprint the equal of 23 Australian households (~1 TCO2/m2 / a).
This translates to an energy cost of about $200/m2/annum or about $4 per customer per class. This means that up to 25% of income is being spent on energy alone, which puts pressure on
already slim profit margins.
The good news is that best practice design can reduce this by 40% or more with thoughtful design and simple operational management practices.
Delivering low footprint design is good for the planet, profit margins and also customer commitment.

Mean summer temperature of 16° - 26°C Measurements taken from monitoring of HEEP houses in New Zealand 16°C is recognized as a minimum temperature for health. 18° - 24°C is recognised as ‘comfortable’.
