VFx abbreviation for visual effects.
It is sometimes shortened as visual Fx as well.
They use CGI elements, live-action footage and
particular VFx software to create realistic
imagery, which is impossible to capture on film is
called VFx.
Visual effects (VFx) is the creation or manipulation
of any on-screen imagery that does not physically
exist in real life.
VFx
VFx enable to filmmakers enhance a story by bringing to
life believable characters, worlds, and stunts.
VFX often involves the integration between actual footage and
this manipulated imagery to create realistic looking environments
for the context. These environments created are either too
dangerous to actually shoot, or worlds that just don’t exist.
George Milies - The Father of Visual Effects
The first edit. “Journey to the Moon” 1902. The first science fiction piece.
SFx
SFx abbreviation for Special effects.
An illusion created for films and television by props,
camera work, SFX
“a non-stop action film filled with amazing stunts and
spectacular special effects”
Special effects are traditionally divided into the categories –
 Mechanical effects (also called practical or physical effect)
 Optical effects (also called photographic effects)
 Visual Effects modify the
virtual world
 visual effects require a
computer and are added
in after shooting
 All VFX are added after
shooting in post-
production.
 Bollywood Movie-
Baahubali, Shivaay
 Hollywood movie- Avatar
 Special Effects modify the
real world
 Special effects are realized
on set(live), examples -
 explosions, fake rain, fake
gun shot, animatronics,
and prosthetic makeups.
 Bollywood Movie -Makhhi.
 Hollywood movie - Pacific
Rim
VFx SFx
Both can produce a stunning visual effect,
but they’re created in very different ways.
The idea is to find the most efficient techniques to
achieve the desired result, whether by using visual
effects or realized practically
Safety: Gunfire, explosions, dangerous stunts.
Cost effective: Large builds, crowd duplication
Reduces the cost during the film making.
WHY VFX?
Here are some of the techniques that are being used in VFX.
Techniques used in VFx
Animation
Rotoscoping
Match moving
Prosthetic Makeup
ANIMATION - This animation technique has been piecing together the shots
creates the illusion of movement. And thus, a video is born.
ROTOSCOPING - Roto artists manually draw around and cut out objects from
movie frames so that the required parts of the image can be used, a process known
as rotoscoping.
MATCH MOVING - A technique that allows the insertion of computer graphics into
live-action footage with correct position, scale, orientation, and motion relative to the
photographed objects in the shot.
PROSTHETIC MAKEUP - Prosthetic makeup is the process of using prostatic
sculpting, molding and casting techniques to create advanced cosmetic effects.
Next phase
5 Types of visual effects
 Compositing
 Motion capture
 CGI
 Matte painting
 Simulation FX
COMPOSITING
Compositing is a VFX visual technique that combines multiple images into
one this process is called chroma keying and the simplest definition is that a
solid background color is replaced with a new background image.
Compositing requires live-action to be shot in front of a green or blue screen.
And the technical process is what makes such scenes so realistic.
MOTION CAPTURE
Motion capture, or mocap to records the body movement of the actor.
And if it captures their facial expressions as well,
it is called performance capture.
CGI
Computer-generated imagery (CGI) is used to describe digitally created VFX
in media. They can be 2D or 3D but are usually 3D VFX.
CGI is most commonly used when creating a creature, mythical or extinct,
like dragons or dinosaurs.
The differentiation between CGI and VFX can be confusing. So try to think of
the process of CGI as digital animation.
MATTE PAINTING
Matte painting is a kind of Compositing VFX. It involves using a still
background, such as a matte painting, and later composited with live footage.
SIMULATION FX
3D simulation is a computer graphics technique that allows artists
to create realistic effects like destruction, fire, liquids, smoke, and
particles in their scenes.
WHY USE ONLY GREEN AND BLUE COLOR
Key tool works with other colors, but blue and green work the best because
the digital images use Red, Green and Blue channels to make up the image.
Red is not very good because actors skin tones often have a lot of red.
Only use as much green as you need - Extra green doesn't serve any purpose other
than converting white light into green light. When white light from your strobes reflect off
of the green screen or floor, it then becomes green light.
BENEFITS
The VFX industry is more beneficial for the film industry.
VFX industry reduces the cost during the film making.
VFX can change the location of the film. For example, if you are shot the movie in
India, but the area was set at the US or other countries.
In films mostly a moving vehicle can be seen which was driven by an actor. But a
green screen window is used in real action. But by using the VFX technology, it is
changed to moving Vehicle.
It is also used for climate control. For example, if the shoot was in the daytime but
by using this technology, the clear weather is converted to a rainy climate.
For most of the fire scenes, VFX technology is used.
