Veterans Day originated as "Armistice Day" on November 11, 1919 to honor veterans of World War I on the anniversary of the end of that war. Over time, as more wars produced more veterans, the holiday evolved to honor veterans of all wars. Congress passed legislation in 1954 changing the name to Veterans Day to have a day to pay homage to veterans of all US wars. The observance date changed a few times before being set as November 11 in 1978 to honor the original intent of the holiday.
