However, Oregon's diverse geography allows it to successfully grow over 70 varieties. The top varieties after Pinot noir are Pinot gris at 17.5% and Chardonnay at 5.1% of the harvest. Major growing regions include the Willamette Valley, Columbia Gorge, and Rogue Valley.

Mapping Grape Suitability in South West Nova Scotia (SWNS)
This is a research project outlining the compiled criteria for modelling grape production and disease development in South West Nova Scotia. This was achieved with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS) using data provided by the Applied Geomatics Research Group (AGRG).
Microclimates and soil characteristics give Nova Scotia grape growers a unique environment to produce high quality wine grapes, even though it is a cooler climate region for vineyards.
There are inherent diseases and stress related threats, but effective planning and management strategies including policy standards assist to mitigate crop damage. Moreover, there exists a potential to recognize improvement to management practices related to seasonal temperature trends.
Wine making
Grapes are fermented into wine through a natural process involving five basic steps: harvest, crushing/processing, fermentation, clarification, and aging/bottling. Winemaking procedures differ based on techniques, recipes, and desired wine style. Key factors that influence wine include the grape variety, yeast strains, terroir, and human interventions. Winemaking has existed for thousands of years and the history shows wine was first made in China 7,000 years ago from mountain grapes.
Wine Tasting Techniques
To learn about wine characteristics, one should taste wines blindfolded without knowing details to avoid bias. The document provides instructions for organizing wine tasting events including selecting 9 other tasters, choosing a location, creating a tasting theme, selecting 9 wines that align with the theme, setting up the space with glasses and supplies, and conducting a guided tasting where participants smell, taste and discuss each wine before learning its identity. Whether a vintage is cool or warm, dry or wet, early or late, can profoundly influence the decisions that a winemaker might make and directly affect the resulting style of wine. In this session, explore how different winemakers approach their craft in the face of variable seasons and a broadly warming climate. Take a deeper look at how certain physical and chemical characteristics of grapes may change beyond the basics of sugar accumulation and acid degradation. More broadly, are winemakers and growers simply reactive or can there be proactive steps in dealing with these changing conditions? Philosophically, how much should one adjust to the vintage in question and how much should the winemaker or grower try to make the fruit meet their stylistic needs?
The discussion will be followed by a tasting highlighting both the beauty of vintage variation and the responses that winemakers employ.
