Initial greetings are formal and follow a set protocol of greeting the eldest or most
important person first.
A handshake, with welcoming smile is the standard greeting.
Business relationships are personal relationships, which mean you may asked to do
favors for colleagues, and they will fully expect you to ask them for favors in return.
Avoid scheduling meetings the week before the Easter.
Always accept any offer of food or drink. If you turn down offers of hospitality, your
colleagues lose face.
15
16. Filipinos avoid confrontation if at all possible. It is difficult for them to say
“no”. Likewise, their “yes” may merely mean “perhaps”.
Do not remove your suit jacket unless the most important Filipino does.
You should offer your business card first.
Present and receive business cards with two hands so that it is readable to
the recipient.

accommodating and compromising, so both can quickly resolve the issue between them

The Philippines is one of the most ethnically diverse population in the world. With 7,107 islands.
People want to grant all requests
Others understand when the request is not fulfilled because saying no might have caused the individual to lose face
Hostess = whore or prostitute
You should never buy the bride and groom sharp objects as a wedding gift because it is bad luck (broken marriages), the same thing on trying on the brides wedding dress because the wedding will not push through
After the ceremony, the bride should walk ahead of her groom or step on his foot in order to prevent being dominated by him throughout the marriage.
Due to the predominance of Roman Catholic, most cities and towns have patron saints who are honored through festivals.
The Black Nazarene was carved by an unknown Mexican from a dark wood in the 16th century in Mexico and then transported to the Philippines in 1606.
In the last festival about 800,000 devotees joined the parade and they walk bare foot.
Lenten season play that represent events of Old & New testaments related to life, sufferings and death of Jesus Christ.
During those times, people are involved in church activities and family life so do not expect them to do business or work.
Filipinos highly value the presence of family more than anything.
When they feel that the truth will offend someone, they will respond in an indirect way (not to deceive but just to avoid confrontation).
PHILS vs. N. AMERICA
more chaos - driving, don’t obey traffic rules highly enforced
meetings – time is fairly loose value time a lot
Eating-loves sharing even if they know if you don’t know personally they won't invite
Stays close-married males stay in their parents independent
Freedom to express-keep your mouth shut freely; not a big deal
Extreme respects
Punctuality-It sometimes can be better to go with the flow and adopt the Filipino practice of “flexi-time” (which essentially means staff who arrive late simply work back to make up the time) rather than fight the daily punctuality battle.
Boss - There is an expectation that one would respect the structure of hierarchy in an office settingFilipino managers like to be the “boss” so they are expected to provide direction.
