As more institutions engage with technology, tools like EduTools provide comparisons of course management software and policies to inform decisions. The growing interest in open educational resources shows potential to open the web for free sharing of knowledge and creativity.

Over two sessions, students learned literature searching skills from a librarian and then collaborated to write a substantive Wikipedia entry meeting the site's standards, gaining experience in open collaboration and science communication. Feedback showed students found the project improved their research, writing, and digital literacy skills.
12 Years of Student Technology Ownership Surveys: Trends & Today’s Opportunit...
For the past 12 years the University of Victoria Law Faculty & Louisiana State Law Center have surveyed incoming students on their personal technology ownership and usage in order to better understand the technology devices students are bringing with them to law school and how we can leverage those devices to provide a richer learning experience for students. In 2004 student data was gathered on laptop ownership and internet access. Questions were added over time, and we now collect data on the ownership and/or usage of: laptops, cell phones, tablets, email, collaborative document editing, desktop video, note taking, file backup, printing, and social-media. Current project goals include:
- Discover technologies students were bringing with them to school and their use.
- Explore ways to use personal technology for research and engaging instruction.
- Identify means to provide equitable access to technologies for students who cannot afford to purchase it for themselves.
By the end of the session participants will have a clear view of the technologies law students bring with them to school, as well as some potential ways those tools can be leveraged to provide more engaging instruction and better services to students.
Personal Technology Plan
Lisa Mulka, a composition teacher at Jackson Community College, outlines her personal technology plan. She aims to incorporate more technology like instant messaging, blogs, and advanced features in Moodle to prepare students for digital citizenship. Over the past few years, she has successfully used wikis for student research projects and class discussions. Going forward, she will research new tools and refine existing uses of technology to support constructivist pedagogy and address educational needs.

Wikipedia overview www.microsoft.com/ education/criticalthinking Wikipedia is a web-based, community-written encyclopedia. It attempts to collect the “wisdom of crowds” by providing an always-editable resource. Anyone with information or expertise can contribute to articles to help keep them up to date and information rich. The benefit of a tool like Wikipedia is that its contents are not developed by a single author or set of authors. In addition, there is no “final publication date,” thus helping to ensure that information is continuously updated. The challenge, at least from a classroom point of view, is that visitors to Wikipedia (or any other online source of information) must take into account the validity of publicly editable information in general. Typically, an entry is developed by someone with an interest in that topic. The interest gathers, and others with information can freely add or edit the article. Wikipedia encourages ongoing, public authorship. There are also five principles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:5P) that help guide editing and collaborating on the site (Wikipedia: is an encyclopedia; has a neutral point of view; is free content; encourages respectful and civil interaction; has no other firm rules). In addition, most entries have reference links to related articles, websites, and other sources of information. This can provide multiple paths to help students validate information.

Many teachers like to introduce Wikipedia by having students research a topic for which they have known and validated information (their high school or hometown, for example, or a topic they have worked on in class). This provides a fun opportunity to have students become familiar with the layout of Wikipedia and offers a chance to check the reliability of a known topic. In addition, Wikipedia offers very detailed information about reliability, validity, and verifiability at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verifiability. Getting students into the habit of finding the information, reading it, digesting it, and then fact-checking provides an in-depth opportunity to merge traditional research with 21st-century web literacy.
