Should Muslims celebrate it?
• Valentine's Day (Yawmul Hubb) is celebrated
on February 14 every year by exchanging red
roses as gifts.
• Some people also dress up in red clothing,
and congratulate one another (on this
occasion).
• Some sweet shops produce special sweets -
red in color - and draw hearts upon them.
• Some shops advertise their goods which are
specially related to this day.
• Love - one of the strongest emotions known to
mankind-
• A power that can ruin or redeem a life-
• It can bring joy or painful heartbreak.
• World celebrates this emotion on Valentine's
Day,
• We see hearts of all sizes and shapes all around,
hearts of chocolate and satin.
• O Yes! It's Valentines! The day of hearts, red
roses, poetry, candies and above all - Love!
• There are many traditions about its origin
• Most authentic seems to be the one from Encyclopedia
Britannica
• It is related to the Roman pagan festival of their god,
Lupercalia.
• It was celebrated on 15th February and in honor of
the goddess Juno Februata
• The names of girls were placed in an urn and
the men would draw out the name of a girl at random
• She would then become their date for the remaining
festival.
When arrived in Rome
• Obscene yet popular festival was Christianized by
replacing the names of girls by those of saints.
• The men were then supposed to emulate
the saint, whose name they drew, for the rest of
the year.
• However this attempt proved unsuccessful and
the use of girls' names returned
Many associated it with Cupid
(the virtually naked god of love)
• CUPID is the central character of
• Valentine's Day paraphernalia
• He shoots people with his arrows to make them
fall in love.
• His mother is said to be Venus (goddess of love)
• Apparently the rose was her favorite flower.
Another tradition speaks
of a Saint Valentine
• Saint Valentine was killed on 14th Feb. by Emperor
Claudius for secretly arranging the marriages of
his soldiers
• Emperor had banned soldiers from marriage.
• The Bishop is said to have fallen in love with the
jailer's daughter during his imprisonment
• He wrote her a letter signed `Your
Valentine.‘
• It became a tradition for people to come.
• In 496 CE Pope Gelasius officially replaced the
pagan festival of 15th Feb with St Valentine's Day
on14th Feb
Valentine's Day Today
• Whatever the origin of this day, today it
seems to have returned to its pagan, vulgar
roots
• Child-god cupid and open dating
being very much a part of it.
• It is celebrated in many parts of the
world in different ways
Valentine Day in Europe
• In parts of France, girl befriends the first boy she
sees in the morning
• If this relationship lasts for a year, they end up
getting engaged on the next Valentine's Day.
• The Valentine lottery caused severe problems in
France and was banned completely in 1776
• Later Italy, Hungary, Austria and Germany also rid
themselves of this obscene custom.
• England remained safe until it was under Puritan
rule but then Charles II started it again
Valentine Day in America
• In America, it was first commercialized
by A E Howland, who made 5000 dollars from
selling Valentine cards.
• In 1995 one billion valentine cards were delivered
in the US
• The postal Dept. made an extra profit of $ 30
million.
• Flowers began to be used in 1300.
• Now people all over America cash in on this
opportunity to kindle the fire in young hearts
• They instill in their minds the necessity of having
a `Special Someone' to love.
Valentine Day Love
dependent on gifts
• What kind of love depends upon gifts for its
survival?
• What kind of love is restricted to one day in the
whole year?
• What kind of love breeds hatred, jealousy and a
sense of deprivation in many?
• Valentine's Day also proves exceptionally painful
for the not-so-popular kids in school who don't get
as many Valentine cards as their friends do.
Concept of love in Islam
• In Islam, it is not a sin if one feels a special
affinity or inclination towards someone
• However, we are accountable if we take specific
steps that might be deemed as haram
(forbidden).
• Islam forbids all forms of ‘dating’ and isolating
oneself with a member of the opposite sex, as
well indiscriminate mixing
• Islam encourages us to marry persons for whom
we have special feelings and affinity.
T R U E L O V E IN ISLAM
• For a Muslim, TRUE LOVE happens only once and
eternally and that is with the Lord,
• The One Who exists from eternity till forever.
• For Muslims, love for Him supersedes
everything and everyone else.
• Love for Allah is meaningful since it then
teaches loving all His creatures (and not just a
`Special Someone').
True believers Love
Allah, the most
• Such people fear (and respect) Allah (Surah
Tawba, 4; Surah Al 'Imran, 76),
• Purify themselves (Surah at-Tawba, 108;
Surah al-Baqara, 222),
• Even-handed (Surah al-Hujurat, 9)
• Steadfast (Surah Al 'Imran, 146),
• Good-doers (Surah al-Baqara, 195),
• Turn from wrong-doing (Surah al-Baqara,
222),
• Put their trust in Him (Surah Al 'Imran, 159).
Let us then find True
Love-Love of Allah
• This is true love in it's purest form.
• True love seeks sacrifice and I've given it all.
• I turn my face towards You now.
• The Lord of my world and the Heavens above.
• I am Yours and Yours, alone.
• My prayer, my sacrifice are only for You.
• My life and death are Yours to take.
• A promise I make to live my life for You.
• An oath that I worship no-one but You.
Allah loves us in spite
of our ingratitude
• The Merciful One continues to love us .
• Our love is a measure of our faith.
• Is our love deep enough to recognize the One we cannot
see but expressions of His love are scattered all around
us?
• Or is it so shallow that it begins and ends only with
humans
• Humans who often abandon and hurt us in this
world when we need them the most,
• Humans whose love brings heartbreak and depression
• Humans who will be the first to leave us when we depart
from this world?
ASK YOURSELF !
Do you love Allah?
• On this day that the world celebrates love and we see
hearts all around, ask yourself:
• "Have I ever thought of loving the One Who created me,
the One Who gave me a heart that can feel love?
• Has this heart ever felt love for Him?
• How many times have I cried for His love?
• Have I ever spent any time, effort or money to express
my love to Him Who has given me all these things?
• Am I confident enough to declare my love for Him?
• Do I ever miss Him in solitude or amongst a crowd?
• Or am I wasting away a beautiful emotion that
was meant for eternity-not just momentary gratification
of our ego?
The supplication
for love of Allah
Love of Prophet
Mohammad (SAW)
• Ask yourself, " How much do I love Prophet
Mohammad (SAW) who had said:
• "By Him in Whose Hands my life is, none of you
will have faith till he loves me more than his father
and his children and all mankind" (Bukhari).
• Did you ever wonder how we can get Allah to love
us too?

• "And among His signs is that He created for you
mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in
tranquility with them and He has put love and mercy
between your (hearts). Verily in that are signs for
those who reflect." [Ar Room 30:21]
• The key words in the verse are - Mawaddatan wa
Rahmah - which translates as Love and Mercy.
Love in Nikah
• Love is that beautiful feeling Allah (SWT) puts
in the heart of a sincere, pious and god fearing
couple at the time of their nikah.
• And this is a serious, long-term relationship in
which both individuals are content and
comfortable with one another.
• This is NOT a short term, action-packed
romance thriller from the studios of Hollywood
A boy-girl friendship is totally
out of bounds in Islam
• Surah An-Nisa a woman's qualities are described:
"Chaste, not lustful nor ones taking secret
friends“
• Muslims have a beautiful institution of marriage
• In marriage, romance is not a summer fling nor
is it based on superficial looks, but on a
serene relationship of mutual affection, kindness
and responsibility.
Believers are to protect their chastity
• "Tell the believers to lower their eyes and protect their
private parts” [An-Nur; 30]
• "The glance is a poisoned arrow of Shaytan. Whoever
lowers his gaze for Allah, He will bestow upon him a
refreshing sweetness, which he will find in his heart on
the day he meets Him."(Hadith) ,
• And the prophet offers one of the best Solutions, The
Messenger (SAW) said: "For those who love each
other, nothing has proven as good as marriage."
(Sunan Ibn Majah)

Love for Muslim brothers
• Islam encourages us to express our emotions
and love at all times, as the Prophet said:
"If a man loves his brother, let him tell him that
he loves him." [Abu Daawood]
• And He said:
"By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you will not
enter Paradise until you truly believe, and you will
not truly believe until you love one another. Shall I
not tell you of something that, if you do it, you will
love one another? Spread salaam (Islamic greeting)
amongst yourselves." [Muslim]
Ask yourself why do I love the people?
• Are the motives all worldly like their looks or
money?
• Is the motive something deeper like their piety or
good deeds?
• Ask yourself! is Valentine's Day anything but
obeying our base desires and following our lusts?
• Are we only like cattle following our passions and
the trends without knowing why, without
understanding?
Valentine's day is wrong for the
following reasons
• 1. It invites people to the relentless pursuit of
promiscuous sexual freedom
• In Islam all forms of intimacy and passion are
confined to the relationship of marriage
"Do not come near to adultery. It is a great sin
and an evil way." (Surah Isra, Verse 32)
2-It is part of pagan culture
• Valentine's Day is based on pagan culture
• Cupid is described as the son of Venus,
the Roman god of love and beauty.
• Cupid's picture is frequently found on
Valentine cards and other paraphernalia.
3- Imitation of Kufr of paganism
• Tashabbuh (imitation) of any pagan culture or system that is
opposed to Islam is prohibited
"And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after
the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful
torment." [Quran 3:105]
Prophet said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them."
[Abu Daawood]
It was forbidden to imitate non-Muslims in their festivals
at the time of the Prophet’s companions and Ibn Al-
Qayyim narrated that there was scholarly consensus on
this point.
4. Extravagance and wastage
• Extravagance and wastage is discouraged by
the Quran and Sunnah
• These days are marketing days. The marketing
agencies launch new and attractive products.
• Red roses especially, other red flowers, candies,
cards, stuffed teddy bears, strawberries (being red
and heart shaped) are in great demands for the
valentine day.
• This year it is estimated that about 16 billion $ would
be spent on Valentine day gifts, cards and flowers
5- Day of glorifying and encouraging
indecency and immorality
• Valentine's Day brings along with it a host
of parties, balls, dances, social functions,
etc.
• Unfortunately, these are havens of free
mixing, alcohol, drugs, and illicit sexual
encounters
6-In Islam, the festivals are clearly
defined and well established
• No additions or subtractions may be accepted.
• They have been prescribed for us by Allah and His
Messenger .
• Ibn Taymiyyah (RA) said: "Festivals are part of the
laws, clear way and religious ceremonies of which
Allah Says (what means):
• ً‫ا‬‫اج‬َ‫ه‬ْ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬َ‫و‬ ً‫َة‬‫ع‬ْ‫ر‬ِ‫ش‬ ْ‫م‬ُ‫ك‬‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ ‫ا‬َ‫ن‬ْ‫ل‬َ‫ع‬َ‫ج‬ ٍّ‫ُل‬‫ك‬ِ‫ل‬
• 'To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a
clear way'[Quran 5:48]
• 'For every nation We have ordained religious
ceremonies which they must follow.'" [Quran 22:67]
Every nation has its festivals
• The Prophet referred to the fact that every
nation has its own festivals when he said:
‫ا‬َ‫ن‬ُ‫د‬‫ي‬ِ‫ع‬ ‫ا‬َ‫ذ‬َ‫ه‬َ‫و‬ ‫ا‬ً‫د‬‫ي‬ِ‫ع‬ ٍّ‫م‬ ْ‫و‬َ‫ق‬ ِ‫ُل‬‫ك‬ِ‫ل‬ َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬
• "Every nation has its own ‘Eid and this is our
‘Eid." [Al-Bukhaari]
• Festivals are the most distinctive things by which
religions are told apart
• Whoever celebrates their festivals is agreeing
with the most distinctive rituals of disbelief
Muslim’s Day of Expressing
Love for Allah
• Muslims already have a day for expressing love and
that is `Eid-al-Adha
• Muslims sacrifice a life to show Allah that
they can sacrifice anything for Him-even their own
lives.
• They re-live the Sunnah of Ibrahim -Allah's
friend-
• He readily proceeded to sacrifice his most beloved
possession, his teenaged son, for Allah.
Love demands sacrifice
• Do we have that kind of pure and intense
love in our life?
• Who do we love the most-our own selves and
desires or Our Rabb?
• If we love Allah, how can we celebrate a pagan
custom when our Beloved Lord abhors
paganism more than anything else?
• Then how deeply do we feel on `Eid-al-Adha
and how do we feel on Valentine's Day?
A Muslim's actions are not purposeless
or meaningless
• Even his love is meaningful
• His expression of love is useful,
• Instead of spending thousands on flowers, on `Eid-
al-Adha meat is provided for the poor and needy
• A Muslim doesn't do something just because the
whole world is doing it.
• He doesn't waste his time and resources.
• Let us be Muslims in heart, body and soul.
This day we express our feelings and
emotions - what is so wrong with that?
• 1-The love referred to on this day is romantic love,
taking mistresses and lovers, boyfriends and
girlfriends. It is known to be a day of promiscuity
and sex for them, with no restraints or restrictions…
• 2- Expression of feelings and emotions is not a
justification for the Muslim to allocate a day for
celebration.
• In Islam, a husband loves his wife throughout the
year, and he expresses that love towards her with
gifts, in verse and in prose, in letters and in other
ways, throughout the years - not just on one day of
the year.
Expressing “love” one day a year?
• 3-There is no religion which encourages its followers
to love and care for one another more than Islam
does. This applies at all times and in all
circumstances, not just on one particular day.
• 4-Love in Islam is more comprehensive; it is not
restricted only to one kind of love, that between a
man and a woman.
• There are many kinds of love. There is the love of
Allah, love of His Messenger and his
companions love for good and righteous people,
love and support for the religion
Refrain from celebrating “Valentine Day”
• It is an innovated holiday that has no basis in the
Shariah.
• We should avoid anything associated with pagan
immoral practices –
• We do not need to celebrate the death of a
Christian "saint“.
• Islam does not encourage flirting or suggestions
of romantic relationships before marriage.
• Love between families, friends and married
people does not need to be celebrated on a day
with such pagan origins.
•

Valentine day

  • 2. • Valentine's Day (Yawmul Hubb) is celebrated on February 14 every year by exchanging red roses as gifts. • Some people also dress up in red clothing, and congratulate one another (on this occasion). • Some sweet shops produce special sweets - red in color - and draw hearts upon them. • Some shops advertise their goods which are specially related to this day.
  • 3. • Love - one of the strongest emotions known to mankind- • A power that can ruin or redeem a life- • It can bring joy or painful heartbreak. • World celebrates this emotion on Valentine's Day, • We see hearts of all sizes and shapes all around, hearts of chocolate and satin. • O Yes! It's Valentines! The day of hearts, red roses, poetry, candies and above all - Love!
  • 4. • There are many traditions about its origin • Most authentic seems to be the one from Encyclopedia Britannica • It is related to the Roman pagan festival of their god, Lupercalia. • It was celebrated on 15th February and in honor of the goddess Juno Februata • The names of girls were placed in an urn and the men would draw out the name of a girl at random • She would then become their date for the remaining festival.
  • 5. When arrived in Rome • Obscene yet popular festival was Christianized by replacing the names of girls by those of saints. • The men were then supposed to emulate the saint, whose name they drew, for the rest of the year. • However this attempt proved unsuccessful and the use of girls' names returned
  • 6. Many associated it with Cupid (the virtually naked god of love) • CUPID is the central character of • Valentine's Day paraphernalia • He shoots people with his arrows to make them fall in love. • His mother is said to be Venus (goddess of love) • Apparently the rose was her favorite flower.
  • 7. Another tradition speaks of a Saint Valentine • Saint Valentine was killed on 14th Feb. by Emperor Claudius for secretly arranging the marriages of his soldiers • Emperor had banned soldiers from marriage. • The Bishop is said to have fallen in love with the jailer's daughter during his imprisonment • He wrote her a letter signed `Your Valentine.‘ • It became a tradition for people to come. • In 496 CE Pope Gelasius officially replaced the pagan festival of 15th Feb with St Valentine's Day on14th Feb
  • 8. Valentine's Day Today • Whatever the origin of this day, today it seems to have returned to its pagan, vulgar roots • Child-god cupid and open dating being very much a part of it. • It is celebrated in many parts of the world in different ways
  • 9. Valentine Day in Europe • In parts of France, girl befriends the first boy she sees in the morning • If this relationship lasts for a year, they end up getting engaged on the next Valentine's Day. • The Valentine lottery caused severe problems in France and was banned completely in 1776 • Later Italy, Hungary, Austria and Germany also rid themselves of this obscene custom. • England remained safe until it was under Puritan rule but then Charles II started it again
  • 10. Valentine Day in America • In America, it was first commercialized by A E Howland, who made 5000 dollars from selling Valentine cards. • In 1995 one billion valentine cards were delivered in the US • The postal Dept. made an extra profit of $ 30 million. • Flowers began to be used in 1300. • Now people all over America cash in on this opportunity to kindle the fire in young hearts • They instill in their minds the necessity of having a `Special Someone' to love.
  • 11. Valentine Day Love dependent on gifts • What kind of love depends upon gifts for its survival? • What kind of love is restricted to one day in the whole year? • What kind of love breeds hatred, jealousy and a sense of deprivation in many? • Valentine's Day also proves exceptionally painful for the not-so-popular kids in school who don't get as many Valentine cards as their friends do.
  • 12. Concept of love in Islam • In Islam, it is not a sin if one feels a special affinity or inclination towards someone • However, we are accountable if we take specific steps that might be deemed as haram (forbidden). • Islam forbids all forms of ‘dating’ and isolating oneself with a member of the opposite sex, as well indiscriminate mixing • Islam encourages us to marry persons for whom we have special feelings and affinity.
  • 13.
  • 14. T R U E L O V E IN ISLAM • For a Muslim, TRUE LOVE happens only once and eternally and that is with the Lord, • The One Who exists from eternity till forever. • For Muslims, love for Him supersedes everything and everyone else. • Love for Allah is meaningful since it then teaches loving all His creatures (and not just a `Special Someone').
  • 15. True believers Love Allah, the most • Such people fear (and respect) Allah (Surah Tawba, 4; Surah Al 'Imran, 76), • Purify themselves (Surah at-Tawba, 108; Surah al-Baqara, 222), • Even-handed (Surah al-Hujurat, 9) • Steadfast (Surah Al 'Imran, 146), • Good-doers (Surah al-Baqara, 195), • Turn from wrong-doing (Surah al-Baqara, 222), • Put their trust in Him (Surah Al 'Imran, 159).
  • 16. Let us then find True Love-Love of Allah • This is true love in it's purest form.
  • 17. Allah loves us in spite of our ingratitude • The Merciful One continues to love us . • Our love is a measure of our faith. • Is our love deep enough to recognize the One we cannot see but expressions of His love are scattered all around us? • Or is it so shallow that it begins and ends only with humans • Humans who often abandon and hurt us in this world when we need them the most, • Humans whose love brings heartbreak and depression • Humans who will be the first to leave us when we depart from this world?
  • 18. ASK YOURSELF ! Do you love Allah? • On this day that the world celebrates love and we see hearts all around, ask yourself: • "Have I ever thought of loving the One Who created me, the One Who gave me a heart that can feel love? • Has this heart ever felt love for Him? • How many times have I cried for His love? • Have I ever spent any time, effort or money to express my love to Him Who has given me all these things? • Am I confident enough to declare my love for Him? • Do I ever miss Him in solitude or amongst a crowd? • Or am I wasting away a beautiful emotion that was meant for eternity-not just momentary gratification of our ego?
  • 20. Love of Prophet Mohammad (SAW) • Ask yourself, " How much do I love Prophet Mohammad (SAW) who had said: • "By Him in Whose Hands my life is, none of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father and his children and all mankind" (Bukhari). • Did you ever wonder how we can get Allah to love us too?
  • 21. Love between spouses • ِ‫ل‬ ً‫ا‬‫اج‬ َ‫و‬ ْ‫ز‬َ‫أ‬ ْ‫م‬ُ‫ك‬ِ‫س‬ُ‫ف‬‫ن‬َ‫أ‬ ْ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ ‫م‬ُ‫ك‬َ‫ل‬ َ‫ق‬َ‫ل‬َ‫خ‬ ْ‫ن‬َ‫أ‬ ِ‫ه‬ِ‫ت‬‫ا‬َ‫ي‬‫آ‬ ْ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ َ‫و‬ُ‫ك‬َ‫ن‬ْ‫ي‬َ‫ب‬ َ‫ل‬َ‫ع‬َ‫ج‬ َ‫و‬ ‫ا‬َ‫ه‬ْ‫ي‬َ‫ل‬ِ‫إ‬ ‫وا‬ُ‫ن‬ُ‫ك‬ْ‫س‬َ‫ت‬ً‫ة‬َّ‫د‬ َ‫و‬َّ‫م‬ ‫م‬ ‫و‬ُ‫ر‬َّ‫ك‬َ‫ف‬َ‫ت‬َ‫ي‬ ٍ‫م‬ ْ‫و‬َ‫ق‬ِ‫ل‬ ٍ‫ت‬‫ا‬َ‫ي‬ َ‫َل‬ َ‫ك‬ِ‫ل‬َ‫ذ‬ ‫ي‬ِ‫ف‬ َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬ ً‫ة‬َ‫م‬ْ‫ح‬َ‫ر‬ َ‫و‬َ‫ن‬ • "And among His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquility with them and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts). Verily in that are signs for those who reflect." [Ar Room 30:21] • The key words in the verse are - Mawaddatan wa Rahmah - which translates as Love and Mercy.
  • 22. Love in Nikah • Love is that beautiful feeling Allah (SWT) puts in the heart of a sincere, pious and god fearing couple at the time of their nikah. • And this is a serious, long-term relationship in which both individuals are content and comfortable with one another. • This is NOT a short term, action-packed romance thriller from the studios of Hollywood
  • 23. A boy-girl friendship is totally out of bounds in Islam • Surah An-Nisa a woman's qualities are described: "Chaste, not lustful nor ones taking secret friends“ • Muslims have a beautiful institution of marriage • In marriage, romance is not a summer fling nor is it based on superficial looks, but on a serene relationship of mutual affection, kindness and responsibility.
  • 24. Believers are to protect their chastity • "Tell the believers to lower their eyes and protect their private parts” [An-Nur; 30] • "The glance is a poisoned arrow of Shaytan. Whoever lowers his gaze for Allah, He will bestow upon him a refreshing sweetness, which he will find in his heart on the day he meets Him."(Hadith) , • And the prophet offers one of the best Solutions, The Messenger (SAW) said: "For those who love each other, nothing has proven as good as marriage."
  • 25. Love for Muslim brothers • Islam encourages us to express our emotions and love at all times, as the Prophet said: "If a man loves his brother, let him tell him that he loves him." [Abu Daawood] • And He said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you truly believe, and you will not truly believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of something that, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread salaam (Islamic greeting) amongst yourselves." [Muslim]
  • 26. Ask yourself why do I love the people? • Are the motives all worldly like their looks or money? • Is the motive something deeper like their piety or good deeds? • Ask yourself! is Valentine's Day anything but obeying our base desires and following our lusts? • Are we only like cattle following our passions and the trends without knowing why, without understanding?
  • 27. Valentine's day is wrong for the following reasons • 1. It invites people to the relentless pursuit of promiscuous sexual freedom • In Islam all forms of intimacy and passion are confined to the relationship of marriage • َ‫ف‬ َ‫ان‬َ‫ك‬ ُ‫ه‬َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬ ‫َى‬‫ن‬ ِ‫الز‬ ْ‫ا‬‫و‬ُ‫ب‬َ‫ر‬ْ‫ق‬َ‫ت‬ َ‫ال‬ َ‫و‬‫اء‬َ‫س‬ َ‫و‬ ً‫ة‬َ‫ش‬ ِ‫اح‬ً‫ل‬‫ي‬ِ‫ب‬َ‫س‬ "Do not come near to adultery. It is a great sin and an evil way." (Surah Isra, Verse 32)
  • 28. 2-It is part of pagan culture • Valentine's Day is based on pagan culture • Cupid is described as the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. • Cupid's picture is frequently found on Valentine cards and other paraphernalia.
  • 29. 3- Imitation of Kufr of paganism • Tashabbuh (imitation) of any pagan culture or system that is opposed to Islam is prohibited • َ‫ج‬ ‫ا‬َ‫م‬ ِ‫د‬ْ‫ع‬َ‫ب‬ ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ ْ‫ا‬‫و‬ُ‫ف‬َ‫ل‬َ‫ت‬ْ‫اخ‬َ‫و‬ ْ‫ا‬‫و‬ُ‫ق‬َّ‫ر‬َ‫ف‬َ‫ت‬ َ‫ين‬ِ‫ذ‬َّ‫ل‬‫َا‬‫ك‬ ْ‫ا‬‫و‬ُ‫ن‬‫ُو‬‫ك‬َ‫ت‬ َ‫ال‬َ‫و‬ِ‫َظ‬‫ع‬ ٌ‫اب‬َ‫ذ‬َ‫ع‬ ْ‫م‬ُ‫ه‬َ‫ل‬ َ‫ك‬ِ‫ئ‬‫ـ‬َ‫ل‬ ْ‫و‬ُ‫أ‬َ‫و‬ ُ‫ات‬َ‫ن‬ِ‫ي‬َ‫ب‬ْ‫ل‬‫ا‬ ُ‫م‬ُ‫ه‬‫اء‬ٌ‫م‬‫ي‬ "And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful torment." [Quran 3:105] Prophet said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." [Abu Daawood] It was forbidden to imitate non-Muslims in their festivals at the time of the Prophet’s companions and Ibn Al- Qayyim narrated that there was scholarly consensus on this point.
  • 30. 4. Extravagance and wastage • Extravagance and wastage is discouraged by the Quran and Sunnah • These days are marketing days. The marketing agencies launch new and attractive products. • Red roses especially, other red flowers, candies, cards, stuffed teddy bears, strawberries (being red and heart shaped) are in great demands for the valentine day. • This year it is estimated that about 16 billion $ would be spent on Valentine day gifts, cards and flowers
  • 31. 5- Day of glorifying and encouraging indecency and immorality • Valentine's Day brings along with it a host of parties, balls, dances, social functions, etc. • Unfortunately, these are havens of free mixing, alcohol, drugs, and illicit sexual encounters
  • 32. 6-In Islam, the festivals are clearly defined and well established • No additions or subtractions may be accepted. • They have been prescribed for us by Allah and His Messenger . • Ibn Taymiyyah (RA) said: "Festivals are part of the laws, clear way and religious ceremonies of which Allah Says (what means): • ً‫ا‬‫اج‬َ‫ه‬ْ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬َ‫و‬ ً‫َة‬‫ع‬ْ‫ر‬ِ‫ش‬ ْ‫م‬ُ‫ك‬‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ ‫ا‬َ‫ن‬ْ‫ل‬َ‫ع‬َ‫ج‬ ٍّ‫ُل‬‫ك‬ِ‫ل‬ • 'To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a clear way'[Quran 5:48] • َّ‫ن‬ُ‫ع‬ ِ‫از‬َ‫ن‬ُ‫ي‬ َ‫َل‬َ‫ف‬ ُ‫ه‬‫ُو‬‫ك‬ِ‫س‬‫ا‬َ‫ن‬ ْ‫م‬ُ‫ه‬ ً‫ا‬‫ك‬َ‫س‬‫ن‬َ‫م‬ ‫ا‬َ‫ن‬ْ‫ل‬َ‫ع‬َ‫ج‬ ٍّ‫ة‬َّ‫م‬ُ‫أ‬ ِ‫ُل‬‫ك‬ِ‫ل‬َ‫ل‬ َ‫ك‬َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬ َ‫ك‬ِ‫ب‬َ‫ر‬ ‫ى‬َ‫ل‬ِ‫إ‬ ُ‫ع‬ْ‫د‬‫ا‬َ‫و‬ ِ‫ر‬ْ‫م‬َ ْ‫اْل‬ ‫ي‬ِ‫ف‬ َ‫ك‬‫ى‬َ‫ل‬َ‫ع‬ ٍّ‫يم‬ِ‫ق‬َ‫ت‬ْ‫س‬ُّ‫م‬ ‫ى‬ً‫د‬ُ‫ه‬ • 'For every nation We have ordained religious ceremonies which they must follow.'" [Quran 22:67]
  • 33. Every nation has its festivals • The Prophet referred to the fact that every nation has its own festivals when he said: ‫ا‬َ‫ن‬ُ‫د‬‫ي‬ِ‫ع‬ ‫ا‬َ‫ذ‬َ‫ه‬َ‫و‬ ‫ا‬ً‫د‬‫ي‬ِ‫ع‬ ٍّ‫م‬ ْ‫و‬َ‫ق‬ ِ‫ُل‬‫ك‬ِ‫ل‬ َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬ • "Every nation has its own ‘Eid and this is our ‘Eid." [Al-Bukhaari] • Festivals are the most distinctive things by which religions are told apart • Whoever celebrates their festivals is agreeing with the most distinctive rituals of disbelief
  • 34. Muslim’s Day of Expressing Love for Allah • Muslims already have a day for expressing love and that is `Eid-al-Adha • Muslims sacrifice a life to show Allah that they can sacrifice anything for Him-even their own lives. • They re-live the Sunnah of Ibrahim -Allah's friend- • He readily proceeded to sacrifice his most beloved possession, his teenaged son, for Allah.
  • 35. Love demands sacrifice • Do we have that kind of pure and intense love in our life? • Who do we love the most-our own selves and desires or Our Rabb? • If we love Allah, how can we celebrate a pagan custom when our Beloved Lord abhors paganism more than anything else? • Then how deeply do we feel on `Eid-al-Adha and how do we feel on Valentine's Day?
  • 36. A Muslim's actions are not purposeless or meaningless • Even his love is meaningful • His expression of love is useful, • Instead of spending thousands on flowers, on `Eid- al-Adha meat is provided for the poor and needy • A Muslim doesn't do something just because the whole world is doing it. • He doesn't waste his time and resources. • Let us be Muslims in heart, body and soul.
  • 37. This day we express our feelings and emotions - what is so wrong with that? • 1-The love referred to on this day is romantic love, taking mistresses and lovers, boyfriends and girlfriends. It is known to be a day of promiscuity and sex for them, with no restraints or restrictions… • 2- Expression of feelings and emotions is not a justification for the Muslim to allocate a day for celebration. • In Islam, a husband loves his wife throughout the year, and he expresses that love towards her with gifts, in verse and in prose, in letters and in other ways, throughout the years - not just on one day of the year.
  • 38. Expressing “love” one day a year? • 3-There is no religion which encourages its followers to love and care for one another more than Islam does. This applies at all times and in all circumstances, not just on one particular day. • 4-Love in Islam is more comprehensive; it is not restricted only to one kind of love, that between a man and a woman. • There are many kinds of love. There is the love of Allah, love of His Messenger and his companions love for good and righteous people, love and support for the religion
  • 39. Refrain from celebrating “Valentine Day” • It is an innovated holiday that has no basis in the Shariah. • We should avoid anything associated with pagan immoral practices – • We do not need to celebrate the death of a Christian "saint“. • Islam does not encourage flirting or suggestions of romantic relationships before marriage. • Love between families, friends and married people does not need to be celebrated on a day with such pagan origins. •
