4. The History of St.
Valentine’s Day
• There are different accounts on the origins of St. Valentine’s Day.
Some historians state two saints bearing the name St. Valentine,
and another called Valentinus, were executed by Romans during
different years, on February 14, third century CE. Their martyrdom
is noted by the Catholic Church.
• Other scholars state Christians attempted to Christianize the pagan
Roman celebration of Lupercalia, celebrated for three days
surrounding Feb. 14. Thus, women participated in a vicious
matchmaking ceremony. During the festivities women lined up to
be pitilessly beat by men, one by one, for fertility, and
matchmaking. Furthermore, the women’s names were entered in a
drawing to be matched with a companion during the festivities.

Rev. C. H.
Spurgeon’s
Sermon on
Dew
(No. 2724) A Sermon
Intended for Reading on the
Lord’s Day, April 28, 1901
“You have the dew of your
youth.” Ps. 110.3
“When you have walked in the garden,
early in the morning, you must have
noticed the singular freshness and beauty
which a summer’s morning always seems
to give to the earth. The dewdrops, like
tears standing in the eyes of the flowers, as
if they wept for joy to see the sun again
after the long night of darkness, sparkle in
the sun!”...
11. “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” Hymn
• 1 What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer!
• 2 Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer!

14. Poetry “On Friendship” by Kahlil Gibran
• And a youth said, Speak to us of
Friendship.
And he answered, saying:
Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love
and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger,
and you seek him for peace.
• When your friend speaks his mind you fear
not the “nay” in your own mind, nor do you
withhold the “ay.”
And when he is silent your heart ceases
not to listen to his heart;
• For without words, in friendship, all
thoughts, all desires, all expectations are
born and shared, with joy that is
unacclaimed.
When you part from your friend, you
grieve not;
For that which you love most in him
may be clearer in his absence, as the
mountain to the climber is clearer from the
plain.
And let there be no purpose in
friendship save the deepening of the spirit.
For love that seeks aught but the
disclosure of its own mystery us not love
but a net cast forth: and only the
unprofitable is caught.
15. “On Friendship”
(Continued)
• And let your best be for your friend.
If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also.
For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to
kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need but not your emptiness.
And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and
sharing of pleasures.
For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is
refreshed.
