Identifying Workloads to Move to the CloudRightScale
RightScale Webinar: Cloud infrastructure offers a new set of building blocks for cost effectively deploying and managing applications. One of the first questions encountered is often which application workloads present the best fit? We’ll start by profiling different environments (datacenter, hosted and public/private cloud) and highlight the application characteristics that align well for each. We’ll then discuss the most common use cases we encounter and the reference architectures we’ve used to deliver them. Along the way, we’ll work to provide guidance how to evaluate company workloads for public, private and hybrid cloud deployments and when it makes sense to re-architect applications.

A joint team from CAST and Microsoft worked to define rules that assess the ability of an existing codebase to migrate to Microsoft Azure. The team then integrated the rules into CAST Highlight and moved the solution itself to Azure.
In this report, we describe the process and what we did before, during, and after the hackfest, including the following:
• How we produced the rules that assess the ability to migrate to Azure
• How we benchmarked the rules
• How we migrated the CAST Highlight service to Azure
• What the architecture looked like and future plans
• Learnings from the process
Our first objective was to define rules that assess the ability of applications to migrate to Azure and integrate those rules into CAST Highlight. This was the more-complex task for our team.
Our second objective was to move the existing application to Azure, thus profiting from App Service features such as auto-scaling and deployment slots. The existing application is a Java web app running on Apache Tomcat and using PostgreSQL as its database. This is a frequent scenario for web applications running in Azure, so we did not anticipate having any issues with this task.

Free migration tools carry hidden costs and unnecessary complications. In this webinar we will feature OpenText Migrate, a non-disruptive migration solution. You’ll learn how hidden costs and unnecessary complications can derail a migration project. OpenText Migrate quickly and easily migrates physical, virtual and cloud workloads over any distance with minimal risk and near-zero downtime. Time, resources and risk are all part of the unaccounted price for the true cost of free migration tools. No surprise that project time is directly related to project costs. Adding risk reduction steps adds time and resources, which is a cost, but more time or more costs, in itself, does not reduce risk.

Transform Your Cloud Validation Strategy from Cloudy to ClearTechWell
Security, data privacy, reliability, and regulatory compliance are critical factors when evaluating whether to move business applications from in-house, client-hosted environments to a cloud platform. Quality assurance plays a vital role in ensuring that the appropriate level of risk assessment, verification, and validation takes place to ensure business continuity during the migration to a new cloud platform. Vandana Viswanathan shares an introduction to the five components of a sound cloud application validation strategy: cloud provider qualification process, validation strategy development, end-to-end risk-based testing approach development and implementation, governance through change management, and preparation for an organization audit/inspection. As a result, you can create an effective QA plan to verify the implementation of a cloud-hosted solution. Vandana provides tips for developing a tactical approach to ensure your organization is audit/inspection ready and meets the criteria for business, security, and data privacy requirements for both regulated and non-regulated business critical applications.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Why You Should Replace Windows 11 with Nitrux Linux 3.5.0 for enhanced perfor...SOFTTECHHUB
The choice of an operating system plays a pivotal role in shaping our computing experience. For decades, Microsoft's Windows has dominated the market, offering a familiar and widely adopted platform for personal and professional use. However, as technological advancements continue to push the boundaries of innovation, alternative operating systems have emerged, challenging the status quo and offering users a fresh perspective on computing.
One such alternative that has garnered significant attention and acclaim is Nitrux Linux 3.5.0, a sleek, powerful, and user-friendly Linux distribution that promises to redefine the way we interact with our devices. With its focus on performance, security, and customization, Nitrux Linux presents a compelling case for those seeking to break free from the constraints of proprietary software and embrace the freedom and flexibility of open-source computing.
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

Cloud Provisioning Portal
A Cloud Provisioning Portal contains information about all
IT/Cloud Services available for consumption and deployment
The Cloud Provisioning Portal is the part of the IT/Cloud Service
Portfolio that is published to customers, and which is used to
support the sale and delivery of services
The Cloud Provisioning Portal includes information about
deliverables, prices, contact points, ordering, and request
processes
17. 17
Why a Cloud Provisioning Portal Is Important
Governance
• Permission to access and provision only your assets
• Provisioning affects capacity
Provides request management
• Cost control
• Managing user expectations (service levels)
Documentation
• Recording the who, what, why, and when a change happened (or did not
happen) to the infrastructure
• Viewing the stage and status of requests
The Cloud Provisioning Portal makes it easy for enterprises and
other consumers of cloud services to use offerings in a formal,
normalized manner. It also drives consistency of the service
obligations and the units of measurement for services
18. 18
Enhanced Self-Service with VMware Service Manager
VMware Service Manager Cloud Provisioning enables the
consistent delivery of service catalog items through workflow
automation
19. 19
Cloud Portal Service Catalog View
The visibility of available service catalog items can be adjusted on
a per user basis
Two mechanisms for filtering catalog items
• By organization
• By subscriber groups
