Get attention first: Shall we start. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for coming today. For those of you who don't know me, my name is HockLeng.Today I would like to discuss how we could use ICT supported pedagogy to engage our weaker students.Perhaps we can leave any questions you have until the end?
Let’s start with a video on a typical day at school.
While we groom and stretch our top students to their fullest potential, I am beginning to realise the importance of engaging my weakerstudents to understand my lessons well and able to catch up in class. My weaker students are frequently late to class or absent from school, for various reasons. They are usually not able to catch up and have no motivation to come for their lessons.
On the one hand, as an educator, I want my students to learn the importance of being punctual, as part of their training on important values. But on the other hand, I know that it will difficult trying to motivate these weaker students by enforcing discipline. There are many factors affecting a student’s motivation to learn. Some are beyond my control but for a few within my control, I am very keen to explore ICT in engaging the weaker students.
Our students are digital natives. Using digital media and web technologies, we can create byte size ICT resources such as step-by-step tutorial blogs, screen recording videos and media-embedded blogs. In class, we will be able to give the weaker students appropriate resources for them to catch up the class. The media-embedded blogs will allow students to revise at their own pace from anywhere and at anytime.
What kind of resources are we taking about? Let’s take a look …
Let’s start with my “Software and Programming Fundamentals” module blog. It was used to complement the notes and to provide additional tutorials. The programming code was embedded as images so that students would need to type them and not simply copied & pasted.
For this module blog, I created additional resource as PDF files to retain the document layouts.
Started exploring Screen Recording Video while I was teaching in Info-T. From ground zero, I started learning the various software applications to create the video resources. At the same time, I explored using these resources to support my teaching.
Again, I was using Screen Recording Videos to support my teaching shortly after I took over the module.
With all these resources, how should we use them in class to support our teaching?
Let’s take a look.
Finally, while I prepared for this sharing session, I have created threehow-to-do videos showing you the steps I took to start blogging, to create the screen recording videos and to integrate them into blogs.
The actual duration of each video is about 5 minutes. But for this presentation, these video will be playbacked at four times faster just to give you an idea. Let’s start with blogging.Next, the screen recording. Finally, the integration.------- mouse click ---For those interested to explore and experiment, I hope you would find these videos useful.------- next page ---It is the end of my presentation. Thank you for your support.
