for Speaking

What is it?
• A free (with the basic membership) mobile app
• Use it to create “notes”
• Share the notes and notebooks
• The teacher has her students share their class
notebooks; from then on, all future notes are
automatically shared with the teacher.
Looks like
someone hasn’t
been doing her
homework!
What can it be used for?
• Ongoing speaking feedback
• Over time, a digital portfolio accumulates valuable
data
• Self-assessments
• Use students’ phones as recording devices
Other Positives
• It’s (relatively) painless to set up
• The teacher can access students’ notes from
anywhere
• The teacher can listen multiple times
• Students can reflect on their own work
• Students (seem to) enjoy doing it

• Download and register

• Integrate it as weekly
homework assignments;
can be used for pre-lesson
scaffolding or post-lesson
review
What are the potential
challenges?
• Technological (il)literacy (Google Voice is a simple
solution)
• Some versions of Evernote don’t seem to share well
(e-mail notes individually)
• Temptation to read a response (The teacher always
knows when the student is reading a response)
• Students need to know that it’s an important part of
the course

Using Evernote for Speaking Assessments

  • 2. What is it? • A free (with the basic membership) mobile app • Use it to create “notes” • Share the notes and notebooks • The teacher has her students share their class notebooks; from then on, all future notes are automatically shared with the teacher. Looks like someone hasn’t been doing her homework!
  • 3. What can it be used for? • Ongoing speaking feedback • Over time, a digital portfolio accumulates valuable data • Self-assessments • Use students’ phones as recording devices
  • 4. Other Positives • It’s (relatively) painless to set up • The teacher can access students’ notes from anywhere • The teacher can listen multiple times • Students can reflect on their own work • Students (seem to) enjoy doing it
  • 5. How do I implement it? • Download and register • Watch this YouTube video to see how I have students share with me: • Integrate it as weekly homework assignments; can be used for pre-lesson scaffolding or post-lesson review
  • 6. What are the potential challenges? • Technological (il)literacy (Google Voice is a simple solution) • Some versions of Evernote don’t seem to share well (e-mail notes individually) • Temptation to read a response (The teacher always knows when the student is reading a response) • Students need to know that it’s an important part of the course
