Outline for Using Apps for Guided Reading<br />Katherine Burdick<br />Here is the outline of my session on How to use Apps to teach Guided Reading that was presented at Mobile2011<br />Thanks for attending!<br />1. Build Background, tap into prior knowledge using QR codes.<br />QR codes were used to connect webpages to leveled books printed from readinga-z.com (http://www.readinga-z.com/)<br />Qrafter was demonstrated but any QR code generator will work<br />qrafter app website: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/qrafter-the-ultimate-qr-code/id416098700?mt=8<br />qrafter code generator: http://keremerkan.net/qr-code-and-2d-code-generator/<br />TIP Qrafter allows you to color code your codes. Use this as a way to manage and match your codes to your students<br />TIP Be creative about where you place your codes - it could be on a quot;
book basketquot;
 sheet of paper, on 3D objects, use to expand the learning by placing them within the pages of a book or at the end<br />TIP Print codes at 20% and save a master file - be sure to write on the paper what the code went to.<br />2. Preteach Vocabulary<br />Screen shots of words, photos, and definitions were used from vocabularyA-Z.com http://www.vocabularya-z.com<br />Use Powerpoint to make four separate slide shows<br />Set 1 - words - type or place a screenshot of each vocabulary word, one word per slide, in powerpoint <br />Set 2 - photos -  place a screenshot of a photo matching each vocabulary word in set 1, one word per slide <br />Set 3 - definition -  place the definition matching each vocabulary word, one definition per slide, <br />Set 4 - context sentences - place a screen shot  or type a context sentence for each the vocabulary word, one sentence per slide<br />Save the powerpoints as a jpg and save each set as an album in your iPhoto. <br />Students use the slideshow to match vocabulary words to definition, photo, and context sentence or use as flashcards (could also use Flashcard Deluxe)<br />3. Teach the comprehension skill<br />Reading a-z projectable books were demonstrated<br />Use Splashtop, Shareboard, or Whiteboard to mirror your screen while a small group uses an iPad or iTouch. On the reading a-z projectable demonstrate underlining main idea. Have students use different color and underline details on the mobile device.<br />Students practice reading using the paper book from www.readinga-z.com<br />4. Students read and practice fluency <br />Have students read into Dragon Dictation trying to get a perfect read.<br />5. Assess Comprehension Skill<br />Have students use Spoken Motion to find any page in the book, take a screen shot, then John-Madden style note the main idea and two details.<br />6. Formal Assessment<br />Use Splashtop Remote to mirror your screen showing the online quiz for the book on www.raz-kids.com while student uses an iPad or iTouch to respond or send students to computer to log in and respond through their account.<br />Have fun!<br />
