Use and Integration Is there a difference? Ashley Bell
What is Technology Use? The act of using technology in the classroom as an educator Lecturing through Power Point Using overhead projectors Computer based grade books Intercom Systems
What is Technology Integration? "the incorporation of technology resources and technology-based practices into the daily routines, work, and management of schools” as defined by the National Forum on Education Statistics (2005). Using interactive white boards Classroom Performance Systems (CPS) Tablets Video Conferencing
The Difference The main difference in use and integration is the fact that with use technology is simply being used as a medium for things in the classroom. With integration technology is incorporated into assignments, teaching lessons and much more. Simply using technology isn’t enough to make a difference in how a subject is being taught. “ Use” is presenting some form of technology into a classroom “integration” is actually letting students utilize technology themselves to gain knowledge.
Why Integration is Important By using the term “technology integration” we as a society are showing our reluctance. Technology should not have to be integrated it should become a standard part of every students education. “ Competency in reading and math--the focus of so much No Child Left Behind (NCLB) testing--is the meager minimum. Scientific and technical skills are, likewise, utterly necessary but insufficient. Today's economy demands not only a high-level competence in the traditional academic disciplines but also what might be called 21st century skills”(Wallis and Steptoe, 2006)
Importance (cont.) According to Technology integration: Essential questions, 2007 “Students today have come to expect learning on demand and speed is the name of the game.  They are not afraid of technology. They multi-task, think less linearly than those of us over 30, enjoy fantasy as an element of their lives, are less tolerant of passive activities, and use their tools to stay connected with each other.”  The fact that students are used to high speed interaction and stay current with the latest technology this should be a clear indication that using technology in the classroom is extremely important.
Future Implications As a future teacher I think technology is vital to every student’s education. Our society has vastly developed over the years and who knows what is to come next! I think that we as educators should welcome the change. We are not only preparing our students for further education we are preparing them with skills to live in our society. If we aren’t integrating technology into our classrooms our teaching will become obsolete!
