- Welcome Introduction Ann Gustafson, math teacher at South Campus II Goals for my presentation What are the benefits of technology? How does technology integration affect students? How does technology integration affect teachers? Why is the instructional technology movement important?
- Here is an overview of our goals today.
- There are so many benefits of technology. A study done by John Schacter (1999) concluded that some technology initiatives help schools financially. The technology can be cheaper than reducing class sizes, it can increase the amount of time students are learning, and it can offer response to intervention opportunities. Tutoring, sample quizzes and many other resources become available for students. In an article about 21 st Century schools, Ted Kolderie and Tim McDonald are quoted as saying “The proper application of integrated technology can significantly raise personalization of schooling with little or no marginal increase in labor costs” In the business office the accountants might not fully be able to realize the Return on Investment. We are providing our students with opportunity and tools to be successful, not just funding another initiative that will phase out in time. What we put into an initiative will pay in full with our student’s achievements. The focus should be on what we can do for the students and what they will take from it.
- Technology opens so many doors for teachers and students. It provides applications that students will use in the real-world and give teachers access to more teachable moments. Students can: making podcasts, designing web-pages, creating spreadsheets, collaborating with people across the country Technology helps with critical thinking skills. “ Multimedia learning platforms combine concrete ideas and abstractions, with teaching conducted through image presentation texts, numbers, and audio presentations in sequence. “(Wang 2009) By motivating students to get more involved, technology makes the education real to the students. They want to play games and create with technology.
- The way students want to learn has changed with technology. Students need to be active in class and to do more than just drill and practice to learn effectively. Communication has altered our entire society. New technologies are being created each day and our students need to be computer-savy. What students need to learn before they graduate has changed. Teachers need to use technology to prepare them and to inspire them. Engagement and motivation are improved with the use of technology. Studies show students are more willing to participate and achieve. A study done by Ketelhut, Nelson, Clarke, and Dede in 2010 expressed that with their use of technology attendance was improved. The personalization of learning is more conducive for students. They aren’t just completing a checklist of tasks and moving on to the next grade. We get them to analyze and explore the tasks to get a deeper set of conjectures. (Wang 2009)
- With the way students learn changing, the definition of a teacher has also changed. Teachers need to give students options with technology access that empowers their critical thinking skills. They don’t just stand in front of the class and lecture. Not only do teachers use technology to supplement lessons, they use it to do their jobs better. Organizational tasks can be done quicker. More educational resources become available. Teachers can collaborate via chatrooms or podcasts. Teachers are trying to meet the needs of students not just complete checklists of what a student should learn.
- Times are changing and what employers are looking for has changed. Education needs to change with the times. Students need to be trained with the technology they will be expected to use in the real-world. Wang in a 2009 article explained that vocational careers impact the economy the most. They help the economy by providing the basis for constructing our world. Construction and other blue collar careers play an integral role in economic stability.

- Teachers, students, and education are impacted by the technology movement that we are surrounded by. Students are exposed to technology problem solving opportunities everyday and teachers need to take advantage of their expertise and help students evolve with the 21 st century. We have the job of educating our young people. We need to do it in a way that will challenge, motivate, engage, and prepare them for the ever-changing world.
