TECHNOLOGY USE VS. TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION By: Jenna Plawinski
Technology Use vs. Integration Technology use takes place when electronic devices are being used. Technology integration takes place when technology is used within a classroom setting.
Technology in the Classroom Technology is more than just the use of a computer and internet access. It can be used for information, images, interactions, and inquiry. These examples include surfing the web, programs on the computer, TV’s, video cameras, handheld computers, cell phones, writing papers, the process of exploring and digital lesson plans, etc… Technology these days is used to make lessons more exciting and better equipped to today’s world.
Technology Integrated into the Classroom When you integrate technology into your classroom you are accomplishing several things by doing so. One of the main parts of integrating technology into your classroom, is making sure students understand the technology and know how to use it. Integration can improve and help you meet standards, better your instructional time, and make a more creative classroom setting. Technology can increase curriculum and assessment when used well . Computers can help push students learning and deeper their understandings.
Technology Helps Time Constraints When the use of technology is integrated in a classroom it allows even more time for students to be occupied, and the teacher to work individually with the others. Records and files are kept on a computer, taking care of the paperwork and increasing time to work with students or focus on other needs. Lessons can take up to thirty minutes if students move at different paces, but technology can move them along their individual pace. Students will spend less time looking for information, and more time analyzing and evaluating what they can find quickly.
Technology and Teachers Development Teacher’s may feel threatened by all the new technology and how to use it more effectively in their classroom. According to Jan Hawkins, here is how you can feel good about it, and get better at it. Intensive sessions where teachers are able to explore new ideas and materials Follow-up support over an extended period of time with mentors when teachers return to the classroom and try to implement new practices Ongoing, reflective conversations with colleagues doing the same job Observation of other teachers in their classrooms, both for exemplary practice and observing the process or change
When to use Technology A few easy ways to know WHEN to use technology. Ask yourself these questions before you implement it. Is it going to enhance your lesson? Is it effective ? Will it engage your students? If you answer yes to these questions, then your selection in using technology will make a positive difference in learning.
Technology and Various Subjects: Technology can help all subjects by… Math: tutorials, skill building, comprehensive courseware, problem-solving, test prep, simulations and visualizations, educational games. Reading/Writing: typing skills, reading comprehension, building vocabulary, test prep. Science: researching, hypothesizing, gathering data, creating graphs, recording data.
Technology Wrap-Up Technology can be difficult to get used to and hard to work at times. We just have to remember that these are the days our students are growing up in and by integrating technology we are just better preparing them for the outside world. Technology can be used to our advantage with helping our students in all subjects. It can cut back lesson times, copying time and recording time, and allow more time to spend with students. If technology is used appropriately, it can be used to our advantage and our help educate our students more effectively.
