Group members from Western University presented on the topics of urbanization and urban settlements. They defined urbanization as the shift from rural to urban living and discussed the types of urban settlements that form. The major issues facing urban areas included housing shortages, transportation problems, pollution, and inadequate water supply. Solutions proposed were increasing public housing, improving public transit infrastructure, enforcing anti-pollution laws, and investing in water treatment plants. The presentation also covered urban planning and defined new towns as planned communities designed to ease population pressures in major cities.

Urbanization refers to the population shift
from rural to urban areas, the decrease in the
proportion of people living in rural areas, and
the ways in which societies adapt to this
change.

• Most countries have their industrial expansion
in major cities which pose a great strain on the
water shortage situation.
