Are elderly With Schizophrenia Less Likely to Develop Alzheimer's Disease
Elderly patients with schizophrenia are living longer due to better medical care and now some are developing Alzheimer's disease. While schizophrenia is associated with cognitive decline and increased mortality, most studies have failed to find increased amyloid deposits in patients with schizophrenia. This has led some to believe that patients with schizophrenia may be protected from Alzheimer's. However, the cognitive deficits in schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease seem to involve different brain regions and pathology. Factors like antipsychotic medications and smoking may attenuate amyloid deposition and provide some protection against Alzheimer's in schizophrenia patients. The cognitive impairment in elderly schizophrenia patients also differs from that in Alzheimer's patients in some memory and executive function tests.

This annual report summarizes the activities of a project run by the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) in Mongolia from 2010-2011. The project aimed to improve rural access to information and training in three provinces through traveling libraries and training centers.

This document outlines a social-semantic infrastructure called SEEK-AT-WD to help educators discover and select ICT tools. It proposes using semantic technologies to publish descriptions of educational ICT tools as linked open data. This would allow tool descriptions to be obtained from multiple sources on the web of data and enriched by both educators and the web community. An ontology called SEEK Ontology is developed to provide semantic structure to the tool descriptions. The SEEK-AT-WD infrastructure implements approaches like crawling other datasets, automatically mapping data to the ontology, and building a semantic knowledge base to store and publish the linked data.

Drawing on our experience of supporting a nationwide Open Educational Resources programme (the UKOER programme), this presentation will consider the diverse range of approaches to describing OERs that have emerged across the programme and their impact on resource sharing, workflows, and an aggregate view of the resources.
Due to the diverse nature of the projects in the programme, ranging from individual educators to discipline-based consortia and institutions, it was apparent that no one technical or descriptive solution would fit all. Consequently projects were mandated to supply only a limited amount of descriptive information (programme tag, author, title, date, url, file format, file size, rights) with some additional information suggested (language, subject classifications, keywords, tags, comments, description). Projects were free to choose how this information should be encoded (if at all), stored, and shared.
In response, the projects have taken many different approaches to the description and management of resources. These range from using traditional highly structured and detailed metadata standards to approaches using whatever descriptions are supported by particular web2.0 applications. This experimental approach to resource description offers the wider OER community an opportunity to examine and assess the implications of different strategies for resource description and management
This paper illustrates a number of examples of projects’ approaches to description, noting the workflows and effort involved. We will consider the relationship of the choice of tool (repository, web2.0 application, VLE) to the choice of standards; and the relationship between local requirements and those of the wider community.
We will consider the impact of those choices on the dissemination and discoverability of resources. For example, the implications of resource description choices for discovery services which draw on multiple sources of OERs.

This project implemented nine school repositories and one university-wide learning repository integrated within the university's virtual learning environment to support sharing and reuse of learning resources. The project aimed to increase deposit and usage of resources through establishing workflows for content creation and resource sharing. Key outcomes included developing a metadata schema and selection criteria for learning objects, as well as increasing strategic focus on repository provision as reflected in university policies and strategies. The project successfully implemented the technical infrastructure but did not develop an interface between the learning repository and institutional repository as originally planned.

The UOC, the Xarxa de Punt TIC de les Terres de l’Ebre, the associació ATICTES and the IES de l’Ebre organized last February at Tortosa, a new edition of the Jornada de Programari Lliure de les Terres de l’Ebre (Conferences about Open Source). This year was about Android and applications developed for this system.
Two members of the UOC iCommunity: Raul Romero and Pepe Mora participated on 23 February 2012 at the full day academic seminar, along with Marc Saez from Ebreandroid and Tomàs Gonzalez from Tarracodroid. This conference was held at the headquarters of the UOC in Tortosa (C / Alfara Charles, 18) and discuss the possibilities and the development of Android, ending with the presentation of the first application for Android made by UOC : UOCMail.
