2. Content :
• Introduction
• Importance in Geospatial
Industry
• OGC Services/ Protocols
• OGC & the Future
• Framework
• Canclusion
3. Introduction : OGC
• Open Geospatial Consortium
• Global organization that develops
and promotes open standard
for geospatial data and services .
• Non profit organization
• 200+ Industry ,Government ,NGO
and University
4. Importance in geospatial industry :
OGC service came to existance to address the :
• Need of interoperability in the geospatial industry
• Standardization in the geospatial industry
• For developing and promoting open standard
• To facilates the seamless integration and sharing of
geospatial information
• For collaboration and adoption by the geospatial industry .
5. OGC Services/Protocols :
1. Web Map Service (WMS): Displays an image (gif, jpeg, png) of vector or raster data
2. Web Feature Service (WFS): Provides access to vector data (output in Geography Markup
Language (GML))
3. Web Coverage Service (WCS): Provides access to raster data
4. Catalog Services for the Web (CSW): Provides access to metadata of geodata and services
5. Web Processing Service (WPS): Provides access to remote GIS operations (for example Buffer,
Distance calculation, Coordinate transformation) responses are standard-based messages.
6. WMS : Web Map Service
• Displays an image (gif, jpeg, png) of vector or raster data
• Standard protocol for serving georeferenced map images
generated by a map server.
• Output is static map
• Eg Google map
• Limited or no support spatial queries .
8. WFS : Web Features Services
• Provides access to vector data (output in Geography
Markup Language (GML))
• Return the actual geographic data that comprise the map
images.
• Output is feature data ( Attributes & Geometry )
• Advanced spatial filtering & querying.
10. Web Coverage Service (WCS) :
• Serving and exchanging geospatial data in raster format.
• Allows users to access, subset, and transform geospatial data in a
variety of formats including GeoTIFF, NetCDF, and HDF.
• Serving and accessing multi-dimensional
geospatial coverages over the web.
11. Catalog Services for the Web (CSW) :
• Type of web service that allow users to discover, query, and retrieve
metadata about geospatial data resources.
• Provides access to metadata of geodata
• and services
12. Web Processing Service (WPS) :
• Provides access to remote GIS operations
• ( For example Buffer, Distance calculation, Coordinate
transformation) responses are standard-based messages.
13. OGC & The Future :
• The forefront of shaping the future of the geospatial industry with the
rapid advancement of technology
• Drive the industry forward and unlock its full potential
• Addressing some of the biggest challenges facing the world today,
such as climate change, urbanization, and natural disasters
• OGC is committed to using geospatial data and technology to create a
better future for everyone.
14.
15. Canclusion :
• In conclusion, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) plays a crucial
role in the geospatial industry by developing and promoting open
standards for geospatial technologies.
• OGC standards ensure interoperability between different systems and
enable collaboration across organizations and sectors.
• By using OGC standards and services, users can benefit from
increased efficiency, reduced costs, and improved decision-making.
