THE STATUS OF ONSET IN SOMALI SYLLABLE STRUCTURE: AN OPTIMALITY
THEORETIC STUDY
Abstract:
The onset in Somali syllable structure provokes considerable argument among scholars who are
interested in the syllable structure in this language. Owrin (1996) and Saeed (1999) agree that
onset is mandatory in this language whereas Zetterholm and Tronnier (2012) state onsets are as
optional as codas in this language. Therefore, this research is to investigate whether onsets in
Somali syllable structure are mandatory or optional in light of Optimality Theory (OT), as a
framework. This study primarily depends on data taken from extant literature including books,
articles, and theses. Furthermore, 10 Somali native speakers were consulted about the fact of data.
This study concludes that consonant epenthesis as well as resyllbification manifest the importance of
onsets in Somali. Consonant epenthesis occurs initially when a monosyllable word begins with a
vowel (onsetless syllable), e.g., /ГЁj/в†’ [К”ГЁj] dog . Likewise, this type of epenthesis is found
in the intervocalic position when syllables of the form CV are associated with vowel initial
suffixes, e.g. /ma a:n/в†’ [ma.ЙЃa:n] not I . The process of resyllabification in Somali is motivated
by syllable types CVC and CVVC that are associated with vowel initial suffixes, e.g. /na:ЙЎ i

These past two weeks, we have focused on the prevalent rape culture in the United States and how
that affects society. We found that sexual violence has become somewhat of a norm in the U.S.,
and that it is no longer broadcasted in the media like the atrocity it is. This, along with the inherent
gender stereotypes within society, contributes to rape culture, which is defined by the Oxford
Living Dictionary as a society or environment whose prevailing social attitudes have the effect of
normalizing or trivializing sexual assault and abuse. Our society bombards us with acts of sexual
violence, through music and visual media. It is treated like a despicable act that must not be
tolerated, one where the perpetrators must be held accountable. Yet, at the same time, it is tolerated,
and the perpetrators are often allowed to roam free without punishment, while their victims are
tortured with what happened to them for the rest of their lives. This is rape culture, and although
the term is circulating more and more, the populous does not regard it as a serious issue, but as a

The Adaption of Double Indemnity Although adaptions are not a new form of entertainment, recent
trends show that the many books that are forced to change to film tend to provoke criticism and
debate. This type of attitude was definitely prevccalent in the film Double Indemnity directed by
Billy Wilder. This was because it was adapted from the novella by James Cain which held the
same title. Substantial differences from the novella made the film a richer and better depicted
story for the audience. It is agreeable that the nature of the adaption was made so that it would
be easily understood by the audiences it was going to be viewed by. The novella Double

Life is more precious than anything else, and everybody would love to live to the fullest. In life,
there are decisions that people make that can shorten their lives. Though it s argued that life is
under God s control, there is no doubt that there exist self inflicted injuries that shorten life on
earth. The decisions people make therefore have dire consequences on their life. To drink and
drive is an example of such courageous decisions with profound effects in people s life. The
ultimate price for drunk driving is an accident, and the legal consequence is jail. It s illegal to
drink and drive even though people still engage in the act (Carpenter, 2004). This, therefore, calls
for more stringent and tougher rules to help curb the habit. There is the need to review the current
laws and regulations to check on the rate of drunken driving failure to which more lives will be lost
at an unexpected time.
There are several reasons as to why drunk driving should not be encouraged. First and foremost,
when one is under the influence of alcohol, their ability to make a sound judgment decreases. One
becomes subconscious, and this limits the capacity to think and act when required. The ultimate
consequence is that the driver is likely to lose control of the vehicle and when that happens, loss

Wasteland Vik Munniz
Wasteland is an inspiring, strong, awakening documentary about a fine artist named Vik Muniz.
The documentary is directed by Lucy Walker, and filmed in the largest landfill in the world located
in Rio De Janero, Brazil. It is based around the lives of several hard working garbage pickers who
desperately want to change the world by recycling. A lot of these garbage pickers work up to 16
hours a day for only $20 to $25 dollars a day. Some of these pickers do not go home for days at a
time, and some of them live at the landfill permanently. I was very inspired by the people in this

The aim of this research is to analyze and discover the way language is used and acquired using
the hypothesis that language use and acquisition is affected by social factors relating to
environment as well as cultural norms and values. Questions that will be explored include: In what
settings are different languages used? How are second and third languages acquired? How do
attitudes towards language learning contribute to the success or failure in learning a new language?
How does context affect language learning? What role does the availability of resources play in
second or third language acquisition? What kind of emotional and cultural ties to different
languages exist? This research was conducted through a one on one in depth interview with a
Glendon student who is Filipino and speaks Tagalog, French, and has some experience learning
sign language. The main focus of this research was to discover how the student learns and uses
Tagalog and French as secondary languages.

of interest. Linguist Dell Hymes coined the term communicative competence to describe the theory

workshop have little empirical support. The aim of the current archival study was to determine if
workshop participants would demonstrate positive changes in communication patterns. A total
sample consisted of 142 participants, including 84 nonrandomized control group participants and
58 nonrandomized clinical group participants. All participants were asked to complete measures
at four time intervals: one week prior to the GLYW workshop (Time 1; T1), immediately before
the start of the workshop (Time 2; T2), and immediately following the completion of the GLYW

Because there was no program or playbill to accompany this production, there was no way to
know the names of the actors or actresses. The best character within the show was Sheriff Dooley
Neal. Neal was a young man who had been brought into the city by Mayor Timothy O Reilly, a
corrupt politician who is willing to acquire money by any means necessary. Neal believed that he
was getting the job of his lifetime, until O Reilly puts him in the middle of a feud between two
singing and dancing families: the Hatfield s and the McCoy s. Throughout the production, he was
constantly being tricked into being in the middle of the feud and getting in trouble for things that
were not necessarily his fault. There were a few malfunctions with the props during the
production, however. For example, there was a scene in which Neal had to shoot his gun and
break a window in a barn. He made the shooting motion, but the sound of the shot had not appeared
until about one minute had passed. He and the Mayor, the only other person in the scene, had burst
out in laughter but improvised the entire scene. Their laughter made it clear that it was not
supposed to happen like that, but they attempted to play it off in such a way that it seemed like it
was a perfectly normal mishap. Minutes later, they regained their composure and continued onto the
next scene. Another great character in the dinner show was Ma McCoy, the matriarch of the
McCoy family. She had a few hilarious lines that were meant to insult
