Universal Design for Learning How can we better serve our students?
What is UDL? ,[object Object],[object Object]
How can it help ME become a better teacher? ,[object Object],[object Object],What can we do?
[object Object],But, with 35 students per class… Multiplied by 6 class periods… Are we REALLY expected to make over 200  individualized  lesson plans each day? NO! That’s the beauty of UDL. “ The concept of UDL is the intersection where all our initiatives integrated units, multi-sensory teaching, multiple intelligences,  differentiated instruction, use of computers in schools,  performance-based assessment, and others come together.” -Donna Palley, Special Education Coordinator Technology Specialist for Concord, New Hampshire
UDL & the learner ,[object Object],As teachers, we must address  all types of learners  in an universally appropriate manner. We can accomplish this by: *Presenting information and content in different ways  (the "what" of learning) *Differentiating the ways that students can express what they know  (the "how" of learning) *Stimulating interest and motivation for learning  (the "why" of learning)

Recognition ,[object Object],Provide multiple examples This method demonstrates that our brains need multiple opportunities and exposure to materials to recognize patterns and remember facts & details Use sound, video clips, text, Songs, physical activities to present Information in a new, fresh way! Take advantage of our technology—use SmartBoards, Promethean Boards, ELMOs, computer labs, student “ clickers”,etc…

Strategic ,[object Object],*Provide flexible models of skilled performance *Provide opportunities to practice with supports *Provide ongoing, relevant feedback *Offer flexible opportunities for demonstrating skill  Allow for multiple practices, yet vary the manner in which you assess or give feedback. Use your ELMO to showcase positive examples of student work or to demonstrate how to improve upon class assignments.

Affective ,[object Object],*Offer choices of context and tools *Offer adjustable levels of challenge *Offer choices of learning context *Offer choices of rewards  BE FLEXIBLE!  Give students options. Allow for different ways of demonstrating knowledge. PowerPoint presentations, videos, acting, dancing, writing, or something as simple as choice in text/novel assignments. Encourage blogs an other technology-based activities.
