1. Unit 3: Solving a Rhetorical Problem
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Task
We are now shifting our focus from defining a rhetorical problem to considering how a
rhetorical problem might be solved within our community. Based on one of the objectives
included in the 2016-2025 UI Strategic Plan, you are going to devise a plan for how you, as a
student, believe such an objective might be solved, in consideration of the indicators listed.
You are then going to craft a Multimodal PSA designed to persuade your fellow university
faculty, staff, and/or students to work together toward making this objective a reality.
Requirements
Since there is a number of genres and media available to you to compose your PSA, and each
genre or medium has different rhetorical possibilities, you will be responsible for choosing
and defining the purpose of your public service campaign and your target audience
(depending on the particular university population to which your objective applies). As
we have practiced with former assignments and class activities, the purpose, audience, and
genre of your PSA should strongly affect the rhetorical decisions you make in creating your
multimodal project. Individual instructions for the different components of this project are as
follows:
MICRO ESSAY – At the beginning of this unit, you will be writing a 500-word micro essay
that clearly and concisely articulates the rhetorical problem you have chosen, describes
your proposed solution in regards to the stated indicators of fulfilling the objective, and
considers how your chosen problem might be affected by one or all of the “External
Factors” listed on page 17 of the UI Strategic Plan. This essay should be framed as a
rhetorical argument with the purpose of convincing an internal funding board that this
objective should be prioritized above others in the plan. Your essay should include three
sources, one of which will be the Strategic Plan itself, and a separate works cited page.
MULTIMODAL PSA – You will be designing a multimodal argument that could potentially
be used as a PSA to raise awareness toward solving the objective you have chosen for
your micro essay. You may choose a predominantly visual mode or aural mode, and use
either digital or craft-based technology.
STATEMENT OF GOALS AND CHOICES – Accompanying your multimodal composition
piece, you will be writing a two-page minimum Statement of Goals and Choices that
details the rhetorical decisions you made during the composition process in order to
effectively remediate your text-based micro essay into a multimodal “text.” This letter
should explicitly state the rhetorical purpose and audience of your PSA campaign, then
explain how this specific modality/genre/medium/design most accurately and effectively
remediates the information in your micro essay.
Due Dates
Micro Essay is due as a Word Document by 11:59 pm on Friday, December 1st
Multimodal PSA is due as a jpeg, PDF, or audio file, and SoG&C is due as a Word
Document by 11:59 pm on Friday, December 8th. These should be attached on the same
submission to the project drop-box.
2. Evaluation
Micro Essay will be evaluated according to an adjusted (for length/scope) version of the Macro-
Micro-Response Essay rubric and will be evaluated out of 50 points.
In keeping with the elements stressed in the “Principles of Design” Lecture and Chapter 7 of
Becoming Rhetorical, the Unit 3 Project will be evaluated as follows:
