What Is My Specialism?
S u b t i t l e
I have been a “radio guy” for many years, and this
has been mirrored with my commitment at Miskin
Radio. Please now call me “Mr Miskin” and Kieran
Poole has merited that by giving me the role of
assistant station manager.
Because of this, I thought that radio should be my
specialism. I have specifically chosen radio
distribution. Covered are the four main methods:
AM, FM, DAB and the Internet.
What Areas Will I Cover?
S u b t i t l e
I will look into many areas including:
- The history of radio (purpose)
- The history and science behind AM, FM & DAB
- Average internet radio upload per hour/day
- Amount of stations using either AM, FM, DAB or Internet
- The difference in quality between AM, FM, DAB and Internet
- Internet radio such as radio player
- Ofcom regulations within distribution such as masts and frequencies
- Do It Yourself through websites such as Spreaker (my direction)
- Podcasts and the future of radio
Research
S u b t i t l e
I will use primary research from students, staff, friends and
family by asking what they already know about radio and its
distribution methods. I already have a contact who This will be
useful because they know more about it than I do.
I will also contact industry professionals and institutions such
as the BBC. An example would be to find out how many hours
or gigabytes of radio they upload to iPlayer. If they deny
initially, I will use the Freedom of Information Act of 1996.
Secondary research will also be used by visiting websites or
reading books relevant to my case.
Production Format
S u b t i t l e
To distribute my findings on radio distribution, I will record it in
the radio studios. This is relevant to my study as it will be a
podcast.
I will add music and sound effects relevant to what I am talking
about. For example, if I am talking about the 1920s, I will add
some music from that era, the same if I was talking about any
other era or decade.
I will be extremely careful in getting the levels perfect; too quiet
you wouldn’t be able to hear it and too loud you wouldn’t be
able to hear me.
How Will This Be Academically Or Professionally Linked?
S u b t i t l e
This will be linked to my academic progression because it will
teach me more about the science behind radio and how it is
broadcast and sent to the listener’s radio, rather than what I’ve
already been taught within radio such as presenting and producing
a show. It’s just another direction to learning about radio.
It will also be linked to my professional progression because I am
actively looking for a role within the industry. I already have a job at
KMFM as part of their Street Team, but my dream is to present or
tech-op for the station. Knowing about the distributional side of
radio will hopefully give me that edge over any other applicants.
